2000 Yellow Convertible
I bought a 2000 about a month ago. The check engine light came on just before I took delivery. The previous owner suggested that I take it to a chevy dealer for diagnosis. I did and the dealer said it needed new cat convertors and an O2 sensor. I reported the findings to previous owner and he suggested I take it to a particular vette shop that has been in business for a very long time for a second opinion (he agreed to pay for half the fix costs). I did so and they came up with the same diagnosis but with a little less certaintee. The cost to fix was less so we decided to get the work done. On the way home from the shop the check engine light came back on. I called the shop and they asked me to bring it back in which I plan to do but thought I would ask all you experts and long time C5 owners if you had any ideas. ;shrug

Hi, Silverfox, and welcome to the :CAC

It might help the folks around here with a diagnosis if you tried Pulling Codes and posting what codes you found.

I think I got them all. 3 seconds is pretty fast when get old. B2283HC, B2284 H, B2282H, U1016H, B2285H, U1096H, B1527H, B1064H, U1064H, B1512H, B0430HC, B0361HC, U1096H.

Some of those codes I couldn't find on the list, but it's interesting that all of them of an "H" (history) after them. Here's the list:

B2283HC, Battery #1 Fault in Right Door Control Module
B2284 H, Battery #2 Fault in Left Door Control Module
B2282H, Battery #1 Fault in Right Door Control Module
U1016H, Loss of Communications with IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)
B2285H, Battery #2 Fault in Right Door Control Module
U1096H, Loss of Communications with PCM
B1527H, DIC (Drivers Information Center) Switch 4 Signal Short to GND "OPTIONS"
B1064H, ???
U1064H, Loss of Communications with BCM (Body Control Module)
B1512H, DIC (Drivers Information Center) Switch 1 Signal Short to GND "FUEL"
B0430HC, ???
B0361HC, Left Actuator Feedback Short to GND
U1096H. (Repeated)

First of all, I'd start by clearing all the codes. From the list of items here, I'd start by checking to see if you've got a ground somewhere. Also, how old is the battery on that 2000?

Yea Patrick, I think you are on to something. Sounds as though the battery might be bad/marginal. Also the idea of a loose ground wire comes to mind. I'd have the battery checked and then check for loose grounds.

See, that was my thought, too. The C5s and C6s are so loaded with computer modules that when any kind of electrical issue crops up, you start getting an array of weird issues- particularly if it's down to the battery that's the culprit. But I wouldn't rule out a loose ground connection, either.

I finally cleared all the codes. The next time the check engine light came on the only code showing is under the heading 10PCM with a code of P0430 HC. Any thoughts? Silverfox7

I tried looking for you and the only thing I could find close was this:

P0430 TWC System Low Efficiency Bank 2

Maybe someone else can tell us what TWC stands for.

I was told that the code is referring to your rear 02 sensor telling you that a cat is bad or going bad. I believe 0430 is the right side. Good luck.

Take it to the dealer right now and see if it's still covered under warrenty! The emissons stuff is covered for a long time.

I took it to the dealer and they said I needed new cat converters and O2 sensor. I did that and the check engine light came on about 10 miles down the road. I don't think it was the cat converters in the first place since the dealer did not sound too sure. I don't trust the dealer.

Here is the GM diagnostic info for the P0430 code on a 2000 Corvette. Bank 2 = right (passenger) side. Reference to MIL in the diagnostics = Malfunction Indicator Lamp (i.e., check engine light). It's saying that the O2 sensor downstream of the converter is sensing a variance from what is expected. The normal cause for this on an otherwise good running engine (that hasn't been run on leaded fuel) is an air leak. Check around the area between the rear of the cat and the sensor.

If all thing could ....

If all things could be this easy! For once I got lucky and it had been "that kind of week" ... we all have them.

The "check engine" in my 96 Toyota came on and the codes at the mech said it was an ox sensor ...... but .... on the way home, I damned near blew the cat off and I know that bill is gonna be over $600.

Soooooooooooooooo ...... :eyerole ...... I get home and jump into the trusty 2000 Vet and guess what? Yep! The f'in check engine light is glowing away at me too!

So, bleary eyed and pissed off at everyone and everything (daughters car needed a throttle body at over $600 the same day and in that famed "daddy voice" .....

So I opened the hood and started a "micro" look at everything ....

- coolant was fine

- brake fluid OK

- gas cap tight as a .... ;)

- oil was half a quart low so it got topped .... (oops)

- washer fluid ... took about a pint ..... :eyerole

The only thing .... only thing .... "out of order" was the power steering cap was a tad loose? Gave it a half turn ... and well ... after the "drill" ... the light went out.

I'd just start at the basics and you may get lucky like I did.

You know, it really doesn't take a large "stimulus" to generate a service engine soon light in a Corvette. When I had my 2003 Z06, I would occasionally get a SES light, and the code indicated the engine was running 'lean.' Each and every time, the cause came down to the fact that the Mass Air Flow sensor had come loose. Reconnecting it and tightening it back up cancelled the code every time.

probably wouldn't have come loose if you weren't showing Bill the rear end of your car :thumb

Yes, but he only saw it briefly before it disappeared over the horizon.
