Does anyone have a fix for drivelive noise or heavy chatter coming from
Tremec or differential when you engage clutch on take-off? Dealer has
replaced flywheel and clutch assy; then said it was caused by firing pulses
from engine under initial load. Sounds more to me like the trans and axle
assy is actually chattering (moving). Possibly countershaft gear noise not
shimmed properly from Bowling Green. Anybody--Any Ideas or Info?

Danny, is this about your C6? If so, I'll move it over to that section.

edit- sorry- saw the title. my mistake.

Noise is a loud chatter when you pull off in 1ST gear. Any solutions?

I do not. I hear what sounds like some engine ping (mild) when I start out in 1st gear at low RPM. I have what sounds like too much lash in my drive train (a clunk when I get on and off the gas), but I think I know what that is and how to fix it. I do not hear what you describe. Someone else will chime in here before too long.

I had this noise from day one on my 2004 six speed. It sounds like baffles rattling whe I take off under low power. GM has a technical bulletin out on this noise and you won't like what it says. Document ID#1297757 says the rattle at low rpm's is normal in manual transmissions that repair attempts will not change. I was upset with GM that they didn't advise of this problem prior to my spending $900.00 for the option

I want to remind people that the Corvette is a performance vehicle. Some of the noise comes about because of that fact. The transmission noise is at least partly due to gear design that is intended for strength. That same gear design tends to be noisier. It is a trade-off. The cabin could be made quieter, but it would be at the expense of more weight. There is a reason that the Corvette weighs 3200lb instead of 3600lb. So if your desire is for a quiet luxury car, Corvette is not the right car. But if you want a performance car that can be autocrossed and drag raced right out of the factory, Corvette is a very good choice. Mine is my daily driver and it sees plenty of autocross and drag strip time.

Solution, install Borla cat back exhaust and avoid low rpm acceleration and you never hear noise again.

Hi Danny Looney -

The video that came with my 2002 Z06 specifically points out the noise you describe as an operational characteristic of the C5 drivetrain - and even shows a short scene of the C5 manual being driven away from a stop to demonstrate that the noise is not abnormal.

The car has an all aluminum engine, coupled to a torque-tube to the rear mounted transmission and IRS.

I am frankly surprised that you were able to get a dealer to attempt to fix this for you.

best regards -

Must not have been clear, dealer didn't try to fix condition, they just advised me of the technical advisory, I said I wished they would have informed me prior to purchase and I likely would have gone with the automatic. I'll soon be seventy one years old and have had a 63, 74, 79 and now the 04 and loved them all. In fact I still get a kick out of hearing those Borla's bark a little bit when I down shift.

Re driveline chatter

Picked up my 03 in Aug. I too complained to dealer about noise. Oddly enough my car makes"the noise" under the following conditions;

I had the same problem with my 2001 it was a clunker. When it idled, there was a clatter like a loose exhaust clamp. Also when I pulled off from a stop, there was a clunking noise and a shudder in the clutch. It was like that from delivery. The Dealer said the shudder was normal as this was a high performance vehicle and the clutch needed to be 'seated'. This shudder disappeared only after 19000 miles. The dealer said that that clunking noise was caused by "Lugging", ie. not enough power being applied to the rear on pull-off, letting the motor take load under 1100RPM. When I took the motor above 1100RPM on pull-off, that 'lugging' sound disappeared. The rattle sound at idle was still there. The dealer said there could be something loose in the tunnel but it sounded normal, all corvettes rattled like that. The result was I traded my 01 for an 03. I have had it for three years now (Nov02 new) it has 21000 on the clock and it does not rattle and the clutch is smooth, go figure. This is a problem you will fight the dealership for for the life of your vehicle ....sorry.

Hi Jack -

Nope - you were clear - I was talking to Danny Looney.....

One of my friends has a 6sp coupe and his trans sounds like it has rocks bounding around in it - that is yet another issue lol.

Sounds like you have a nice long term relationship going on with Corvette. Very pleased to make your aquaintence.

best regards-
