Celeryman...Mike
Heres what I did for the motor on my '63 chevy.....I started with a small block 400 ci/300hp motor out of a truck....bored it 30 over and made it into a 406ci....computer balanced every thing....added a camshaft for a 1968 vette 327/350 HP ..I love to hear those lifters rattle....added a duel plane intake offenhouser.......added a 750cfi Rochester carbarator....added HEI distributer....the heads are the original double hump heads with 202 intake valves....I now have 158k miles on it and it will still make a fool out of a Mustang 5.0....
Now let me tell you the problems I had...
first I tore up the transmission....had to replace it with a short tailshaft T400
Next I wrung off the drive shaft and universals.....I had to make it stronger[oversized]
next I tore up two axels......and tore out my positraction
I've had my problems with it but ,,,,It is so sweet to know that you can burn the tires at 55mph anytime you want....
And yes I am 63 years old.....Everyone that knows me says "when are you going to grow up" and I just smile
I know this didn't help,,but I thought It would be worth the smile
Good luck to you on your rebuild

Have who ever does your machine shop work press in new camshaft bearings...they should have the tools....

Do you need to replace the cam bearings when you swap out the cam. I would think you should, but I cant seem to find any cam bearing kits.

What do you guys normally do.
If you have the engine out take it to a machine shop and have them put in the bearings. It takes a special tool and is not a home project. If you are not removing the engine then it is not possible to change the cam bearings.
