I'm exploring all options to get my o/d to function, I see there have been several recent posts regarding sick 4+3 od's, my 86 has same problem, 4-sp (inc. reverse) works great, just no OD!

*replaced relay on firewall
*changed fluid and filter,

hoping the problem may be within the shifter knob,
BTW shifter knob has side to side play in it, however button
is making good contact with od pin.

what is proper way to remove knob & shifter boot to check
that wires are secured, (suggested fix).

86 black Pace car convert, SLP cold air intake, K&N, Flowmaster cat-back, SLP underdrive pullys, 70k miles, love my car, runs great, just havent driven over 60 mph in 3 months, help!

Stick your fingers or a small tool in the button and pry it up hinging towards the back.

Pull it off.

There will be a "T" bar (The actual button) and a plastic "tray".

Unscrew the "T" bar ---> it has EXTREME fine threads so this will take awhile.

Remove the plastic tray

Now you'll see a steel "Wedge"...Remove it (Just pull it out with some pliers)

Unscrew the knob like any other.

IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DO NOT Injure, hurt, or even breathe on the darn OD switch thats found inline on the actual shifter. This thing is EXPENSIVE!!

As for the boot?

Open your console remove the screw going into the shifter's console. Remove all the screws you can see after that (Theres no hidden screws here)

Simply pull it up and your boot is held on with four screws (Remove em)

Pull out the boot.

Finito!

AH Mark the "T" bar as you will need to know what depth to screw it in for reinstallation. As for the knob just screw it on harder to remove any slack. (Worked on mine)

As for your OD Mine died as well.....Heres one of the GM mistakes.

To that inline switch I was telling you about is two black wires....Heat them up Im betting theres no wires in there because they broke!

This is what I did with mine.

I used Pheonix Gold speaker wire LOL (Hey its good stuff)

Cut the wires at the switch and cut as far as you can go. Now install a new GOOD quality wire set (Remember this wire is CONSTANTLY moving hence the reason I used PG wire) Solder and shrink tube/tape.

GM used a CRAP quality wire set here and they ALWAYS brake leaving the OD unit all alone with no switch to run it.

AGAIN Careful with that inline switch its like 150 bucks CND to replace it (I hurt mine but I fixed it thankfully)

Fixed.
