I have a Chevy big block 7.4 L V8 454 4BBL in my 33' Holiday Rambler RV w/22k miles on it and runs beautifully. Will it fit in a 63-67 vette or 84-89 ??? I know absolutley nothing else about it except I think it's the 4 main with big cam becasue of the RV. As it sits now I think it's rated at 425 hp. Sure would look nice in my vette. Thanks for any information...:w

It'll fit..........with a heck of a lot of modification (to the 84-89). I've got a Corvette Fever article laying around somewhere on an '86 that was fitted with a big block and it was awesome. I'd sure love to have one done. Imagine the sound of that

Put a BB 402 (396 bored .030) in a Pontiac T/A in the 80's. The main issues (all overcome with a saw, blow-torch, or $):
- Motor mounts, bought some from an older Camaro... then welded in place (didn't feel up to drillin' the frame). Since the completed engine was pretty heavy, I found a friend with a stripped down BB and used that to line up the mounts and the frame.
- Tranny, upgraded to a turbo 400.
- Drive shaft, sent it out to be shortened and balanced.
- Electronics, kept hooking up wires until it turned over.

Only took two years of my time and all my money. Well worth it though. GOOD LUCK!

OK guys thanks..!!! I'm not quite at that "gonna do it stage yet" but just dreaming I guess. Would be quite a project but look at the outcome.....scheechs...what a car to have. :_rock

JT ZR wouldn't mind seeing that article...I imagen you'd have to just trash the computer in an 84-89 but hey, wouldn't hesitate on that.....:L

Fishman my sintiments exactly with the saw & blow torch. I was just wondering about the exhaust system tho...might be a tight fit and of course the trans & drive shaft would have to be replaced I imagen....If anyone knows of a web site where somone already has done this I would appreciate it also I need to find out a little more about this engine. It's an '87 but anything else is just guessing for now. ;shrug

I will most likely try and dig it up next week. I'm moving this weekend so I'll be going through some stuff. I'll find it.

Oh... did I forget to mention the exhaust? And the radiator, and the shifter, and the hoses, and the air intake, and the A/C, and the.... well, you get the point.

It's been done, several times including GM itself:

I thought of doing that to my '87 before I decided just to go with a big small block. I also had a chance at an LT-5 but that would require as much if not more work.

anything is possible it will fit, and the radiator, and the ac and the vac lines, and the exaust, and the air intake they will fit too, but who needs a/c when you got 425 hp in a c4!!! And on a personal note (big fan of fuel injection) take out a loan on the house, rip out the big block and put a universal MPFI on it , now that would look sweet, and def. be something to tell the grandkids about (;

Have fun,
Paul

Check out fellow forum member Dave_C._95_Z28's web page on what he went through replacing the LT1 in his 95 Z28 with a big block. Lots of custom brackets and modifications, but if fit. :)

Thxs for the input...!! :w
A famous movie star once said, "A man's got to know his own limitations" and this is way way way beyond mine. I neither have the time, skill, knowledge, tools or space for a project of this intensity and size. If this comes about my plan is to find a Professional Hot Rod Builder's Shop somewhere in this country, hand them the engine and whatever year corvette they decide is best for this and ask them to give me a call when it's finished. That way I'll know it's done right the first time and everything that's put into it works with everything else. <tranny, drive shaft, rear end etc:> In the mean time I'm looking at a little 57' boat to anchor off Vero Beach, east coast of FL , live aboard and go treasure hunting.
Thanks again for everyone's info:...!! :Steer
