1) The two output yokes in the differential SHOULD have a C clip holding the yolks captive into the diff.... correct?

2) Is the battery hold down clamp a generic pep boys style replacement.. or is it Corvette specific ( I assume NCRS judges take points off for bungie cords!!!)

3) Hurst shift linkage.. IN a NORMAL vette you have to lift a T lever to get the linkage over to engage reverse... is there NO lockout in the Hurst.. I do not see any levers.. the stick does not move up & down... ( and I have to find a replacement chunk of the linkage.. the rod that actually pushes/pulls the reverse lever on the tranny..Mines missing!!!!) How do you engage reverse in a NORMAL hurst setup?

More questions to come.

Hey Vig,

I cant believe that the NCRS would deduct points for your bungee cord battery retainer, unless they did not have Corvette molded into them with the correct font, size, color of ink, and are not installed in the correct direction. Is it a A/C equipped Corvette?

As for the Hurst shifter, I would contact Hurst and try to get any tech help and parts from them, they might be able to supply info and parts to get you up and running backwards. I have heard that they are helpful and willing to help their customers continue the use of their products. They might also be able to fax or send you a copy of the installation instructions for that linkage so that you could check to see if thats all thats missing.

Remember "this is the fun part"!

My car is a 1966 with a 411 posi and mine has clips in it to hold the stubs in/on

On my car they are not generic ones I purchased them from paragon reproductions along with the proper style retainer

There is no reverse lock out on the hurst if you want a reverse lock out you need to remove the hurst.

I assume you got your car then?

Ok( 64 shift & rearend)

YES I have the car!

Got the linkage instructions ( and some parts I HOPE the correct linkage rods.. or something I can temp together) from the local auto parts store motor head. and the Mr.Gasket set of bushings & linkage clips.

The read end all need clips... I gotta drop my pumpkin..WAHHHHHHH, the 2nd reason you need the clips for the yokes.. is if you catch a LITTLE AIR.. the yokes will start pulling out.. if you catch ALOT of air.. the odds of the shafts sliding back in PERFECTLY are slim & None!

So that's NEXT on the BIG list...

More later.

Vig, most of the time when the yokes are free to pull out like that, the clips are laying in the bottom of the diff case because the inner ends of the yokes have worn against the pinion shaft to the point where the case-hardening on the end of the yokes finally wore through, then the wear accelerates rapidly, right through the grooves for the clips. For peace of mind, I'd replace the yokes, although it's highly unlikely they'll ever pull out unless you really "get air" big time; there are thousands of 'Vettes running around out there with the clips in the bottom of the diff and people don't know it.

Hey Vig

Keep telling yourself "this is better than cleaning out the bilge on the ski boat"! Glad your getting time to have "fun" and its better to find the problems now rather than later, when your out crusin!

Dont get discouraged, we all applaud you for the task that you decided to tackle! Go Vig Go!!!

Good luck, Bob

Hurst Shifter

All the Hursts with out pull up lockout I have used have stiff springs to keep you out of reverse. You have to push it over hard to get reverse, you're not likely to do it by accident.
