Hi

I'm new to this forum and I'm hoping someone can help me.
About 3 weeks ago I bought my first 'Vette - a '65 coupe w/ "numbers matching" 327/365hp motor.
For me this is a dream finally come true since I was about 12 years old!
anyway.......the car is overall in excellent condition having completed a complete frame off restoration just about 500 miles before I bought it.

There is one thing though I've found that that the previous owner seemed to have neglected during the restoration. The knob under the dash that controls the real exhust fan in not operational. I've traced the cable back to the fan motor and unhooked it and tried the operation but still nothing. the cable looks original and is frozen - probably rusted stuck inside. I have parts catalogs from places like Mid-America, Eckler's, Corvette World, etc but I can't seem to find a listing for a replacement for this cable. I would go buy a simple "throttle cable" to replace it but the control knob that mounts under the dash looks to be an integral part of the assembly and it needs to replaced as one item (both the cable and knob control).
Can anyone help me with ideas on locating this part. My car doesn't have AC and I have the feeling that as the weather heats up this summer i'm going to need as much help from this rear exhust fan as I can get!

Thanks!

This maybe it at PARAGON (800-882-4688)part#6773K heater control switch and cable assembly to rear compartment exhaust fan $150.00

I didn't have a Paragon catalog but i'll look that part up from them.
Thanks!

hmmmm, I don't think that can be the proper part. it says it's only 28" long and 28" is way to short to make the run from the dash mounting postion, down the lower kickpanel, along the doorsill track, and back to the exhust fan motor.

oh well, time to keep researching........

Thanks for replying anyway!

Barry ... If you need the page out of the assembly manual where that part goes send me your email address and I will email it to you. I have the page scanned to a picture/word doc. ...Ed

The Long Island Corvette PDF link you included listed what looks like the proper part.
Thanks so much!!
I'll call both of the companies to confirm before I order it though.

BTW, I went to your website and looked at the rebuild of your '67. What a sweet car! the color looks awesome too.
I'm curious, are you going with undercar exhust or sidepipes? My '65 w/ the sb 365 has sidepipes and it's sounds so sexy to me (although I'm afraid the neighbors are going to learn to hate the car because of it). I can't even imagine how good yours could sound w/ that 502 and the sidepipes.

Wiscane, that would be great. It looks pretty easy to replace, but I never underestimate my considerable ability to take a simple thing and mess it up completely! having the page from the assembly manual would be very helpful.

Barry,

Thanks for the compliment. I'll be using Hooker sidemount headers with spiral baffles in the slip-on tubes. I'll shut down two blocks before home and glide in. :D

sidepipes on a worked 502 motor.........I think I'll hear you all the way down here in the US
LOL

I hope for your neighbors sake you don't like to get an early start on Sun. mornings! Imagine hearing that car wake you up at 6am.

Welcome to the forum, Barry - you'll find a great bunch of guys here! If you haven't done so already, I'd recommend getting the following items to get your technical library off to a good start and help you learn more about your '65 (good hints when your wife says "I never know what to buy you for your birthday or at Christmas"):

1965 Corvette Assembly Instruction Manual
1963 Corvette Shop Manual and '65 Supplement
1965 Chevrolet Chassis Overhaul Manual
Noland Adams' Corvette Restoration Manual & Technical Guide, Vol II ('63-'67)
NCRS 1965 Corvette Technical Information Manual & Judging Guide

I wouldn't depend too much on Eckler's or Mid-America for parts - they're not midyear specialists, and sell more jewelry and jackets than real parts. Personally, I prefer Paragon, Long Island Corvette, Dr. Rebuild, and Corvette Central for the majority of real midyear parts. Their catalogs will cover 90% of everything you'll ever need. There are other good suppliers too, and you'll hear about them as you go along. I've had a couple of '65 327/365 coupes - terrific cars!

thanks for the list of recommended books. I do have the NCRS book but i'll look into the others as well. After getting various catalogs so far I do understand what you mean about Ecklers and Mid-America. I ordered the LI Corvette cat, and Paragon and I already got the Corvette Central, Corvette World, and Zip.
But I do see a small advantage to the Mid-America cataloge with their big selection of "gadget" stuff. I was thinking of turning my basement into a "Corvette Room" and they do have some cool stuff like Neon signs, clocks, etc. My wife loves to wear a sterling silver charm bracelet she has and she already found a silver midyear charm for it. LOL. I know, I know, a complete waste of money that could be better spent on the car, but the car really doesn't need much so why not. All part of the hobby I figure.

Thanks for the link. I ordered their catalog too as soon as i read your post. Exploded views are just what I need to help identify and parts I may need since i'm new to all this and it's my first veete and first midyear. sometimes it's hard to identify the proper part just from a description or listing but I'm sure I can do it with exploded views. The exploded view PDF you sent me last night for the proper fan control cable was just what I needed.

The LIC cable is what you're after. I just finished repairing the same cable for my car. Different problem though. Mine moved freely but the steel tube at the dash bracket was dislodged. A previous owner or their "mechanic" had jsut wired it together with some real heavy-guage wire. I popped off the knob and removed the bracket. Drilled it out a little in the front, reinserted the tube and drilled for a small set screw. Few cent fix for a $135 part. If you have to take off that knob, wrap the cable shaft (I used a piece of 1/4" copper tubing slit down the side using the Dremel) grab it in the vice if you can and with a crow bar or claw hammer raise the knob straight up and off the shaft. The shaft is "barbed" inside the knob. You might try hanging the cable up and running PB Blaster or equivalent into it (if it will take it).
BTW on my car, the cable was mounted on the wrong side of the dash. Moved it back where it belongs. Also had to rebuild the switch on the blower motor housing.
Good luck.

thanks for the great info!! I didn't even know the knob could be taken off the cable, it looked like it was one assembled unit. Do you know if I order the cable do I have to order the knob seperate or can it be ordered as an assembled part already together?
I'm hoping that once I get this replaced the whole thing works. I haven't tested the fan blower unit itself. As I understand it, by pulling the knob out it turns the unit on and by turning the knob it has two positions, a low speed and a hi speed on the fan. Is this correct?

The blower speed is set by how far you pull the cable out - first detent is low, second detent is high. There's a cam/detent arrangement on the lever that controls the switch at the blower housing.

John,
Thank you for the clarification. :)

As you desribe it, it's kinda like the heater control switch. The first detent gives you the heat and the 2nd detent switches up into the defroster mode.

Until I get a chance to meet others around here with coupes things like this I don't know except from what I learn on here, that's why i love this forum already. I have friends that have '65's and '66's but both of them are convertibles so they don't know anything about this rear fan at all and couldn't help me

Did you get a '65 owner's manual with your car? I think the rear blower operation is described in the manual.
