I can send you pics of my switch etc. John is correct that it is all controlled at the rear. The detents are actually part of the switch itself. You can see that at the rear where you disconnected your cable. There's a plastic slide inside the switch housing with raised tabs on it. They ride in the notches (serrations?) that you can see in the top of the switch housing. There is a copper slide on the plastic part and a spring inside the plastic slide pushes it against the contacts that you see on the bottom of the switch. So cable position alone controls the speeds. Twisting the knob simply spins the shaft connected to the cable. It is my understanding (set me straight if this is wrong JohnZ) that the rear blower cannot be activated when the heater is on. There is a brown wire from the rear harness with a connector that hooks up to a lug on the heater control switch. Just replaced that harness and it appears the harness repair done previously (and not very pretty I might add) suggests it was the rear blower that may have caused the problem(s). Wires to it were cooked. My repairs to the switch were to carefully reshape the plastic slide above and free the spring which has fused to the plastic do to the overheating (aka meltdown). Switch moves easily now. Don't know if I'm going to reconnect this thing or not as most of the stuff in the archives of various Forums suggests they were not very effective anyway. Let me know if you'd like some pics of the switch, etc. Easier for me to e-mail you some.
