66 - Pull engine and tranny as one or separate?

Small block - 4 speed
Everything is apart and radiator/shroud removed.

Should I just disconnect the engine from tranny or pull as one single unit? Just wondering from those who have done it.

I'll refresh the engine and put in a new clutch. Would prefer to leave the tranny in place (had a rebuild about 2 years ago).

Does this make it harder to put the engine back in?

Looking for past experience and opinion.

Thanks,
Doug

I have a 66 with a 427 in it and I did not see how it would be possible to get it out in one peice because of the NON removable crossmember.Maybee the small block is alot smaller to allow it to come out in one peice

All of the other car I have restored in the past (non corvettes)I have always removed them together.Once you have the motor and trans out of the car it makes it easyer to detail the engine bay, motor and trans.

Dougif you leave the tranny in I know alot of folks run into a problem of mating the trans back up to the motor.(getting the trans to mate to the bellhousing the last 1" or so) problems with the input shaft getting into the pilot bearing in the flywheel

Leave it together!!!!!!! Its a little harder to handle,But you will get much better results when the job is completed:D

Together is the way to go.... Dave..

Much easier apart, it will lift straight out. Why mess around with a 6 foot 900 lb piece of iron tipped on end!
