On a 1967 327/350HP motor, The aluminum intake is left a "natural" unpainted finish. What about the termostat goose neck, and bolts? Is this painted silver?
The area of the cylinder heads that the intake manifold bolts too, (between the valve covers and intake) What should this look like? Should it be painted engine orange, or silver, or should the intake gasket be painted also? Thanks Ken

Ken:

Originally, the engine was assembled, including the fuel pump, spark plugs, plug heat shields, bellhousing, intake and exhaust manifolds. I am not sure about the valve covers, but if they were in place, then they were masked with a protective boot. The entire assembly was very sloppily painted orange, so there was overspray on the exhausts, and along all edges of the intake manifold, including the water pump bypass hose (if applicable). The edges of the intake were then spot painted with silver to cover most of this mess, then the valve covers were installed (if not already). The carburetor, alternator and bracket , ignition shielding, wiring was installed during final assembly, in St. Louis. This is the process as I understand it, but John Z once worked at the Flint engine plant, so he can probably expand and/or correct this explanation.

There is no hard and fast rule here. The key word is "sloppy". So, if you know the sequence of events, then have a dozen beers, imagine that you are an assembly line worker in the mid sixties, and go to town.

As far as NCRS judges are concerned, they will definately look for some orange overspray on the exhaust manifolds. All else is extremely subjective.

Hope this helps.

Joe
