1969 Riverside Gold Coupe
I have a 69 Coupe that is all original and matching numbers with 60,000 miles. Cars runs great and is in excellent condition. Even has the original T3 headlights. As a true survivor the paint is shot, but have been told that it is worth more in its present condition and painting was not recommended. Any thoughts on this subject. The original color is Riverside Gold. New to all this so appreciate any input.

That was my thought as well because it looks rough as is, but not sure if NCRS would feel the same and I would like to pass it by them for certification.

Welcome 69cruiser!

Welcome to Corvette Action Center.

If you want NCRS certification, I'd get it certified before you paint it. However, if you get survivor certification and then paint it...it sort of negates the 'survivor' status, but you can show that up until the judging it was a survivor.

Personally, if value matters that much to you, I'd research and find out for sure if it is worth more in its present condition vs. having new paint and determine if that is important to you.
Ultimately, the vehicle is yours and you should do what you want to it. Why did you purchase your vette? Investment or to enjoy?

For myself, the only thing that would hold me back from such a decision was if the vehicle had any sort of historic value in its present condition.

I Agree with Heidi. If you even have a small thought about going for an NCRS Bowtie or Bloomington Survivor, don't paint it. Once you paint it, these awards are out of the question. With NCRS, the paint must be 80-85% (I forget which) original. However, once painted, you can still got for NCRS Top Flight or Bloomington Gold.

It very well might be worth more, but only if the rest of the car is equally untouched. If the motor, interior and chassis have been redone, then it might be viewed simply as an incomplete restoration and worth less than if it had new paint.

If you're really curious, get ahold of your local NCRS chapter (www.ncrs.org) and ask them if they'd like to take a look. Better yet, join up and get a low cost education about your car!

I personally would paint it. But I'm not afraid of being disqualified for those awards. To me, owning a Corvette is not about an award. It's about driving and having fun and looking the best you can. :D

But this matter, I think, is a personal preference.

I'd hurry up and get the survivor awards....THEN paint it! Best of both worlds.:D

I wouldn't paint it...

but that's me. I would rather have an OLD car that looks and smells like an OLD car that has been so called "unmolested" than a NEW, OLD car that has been over restored. Unmolested old cars are getting hard to find nowdays, it seems everyone is restoring old Corvettes. If I wanted a NEW car I would go out to the dealer and get one?

It's your Vette and you can have both worlds. Get it judged before painting.

Just my opinion.

I find myself torn between keeping it original and painting. Everything on this car of importance is original and I so enjoy driving it and it really does not bother me that the paint is so faded, but the other side of me keeps telling me how good this vehicle would look with a new coat to really enhance the beauty it is. I do appreciate your input and will ponder on this for a while before I make any decisions.

Unless the paint has worn thru in spots, why not buff it back to a nice shine? That way you still have the original paint, but it's shiny. :D

Don't paint it. Not a least for a couple of years. You said you enjoy it now, so why bother? You can always repaint a few years down the road.

If you want something to paint, buy a project car and rebuild it.

hey if its the original laquer paint
you may be able to compound it also you may want to try those clay stick to take out
those small imperfection on the paint
if you take your time and there is enough paint left (not too worn) you may be able to save it.
i would start in an small area (like the gas cap :) if you are not to sure

or maybe bring it to a friendly body shop and ask them for sugestions or help
they have all the stuff
good luck.

PS i painted mine but the paint was beyond help and too many scrapes and deep scratches, but I still tried the compound and it made a huge diference on the ares that we'rnt too bad

Cause it's only original once. After that it's just another restored car.
I think that pretty much sums it up and to the point!
