Ijust got this LT4 and was thinking about unlpuging the 1ST to 4TH plug what are your thoughts on this thanks for your help is this somthing i can do myself.should i unplug it or leave it be.

I wish I had one to unplug, most other owners do!!! But mines an AUTO!!!!!!! Unplug it , Try it, If you dont like it, plug it back in!!!!:L

Unplug it. It is a pain. I would suggest buying the cags eliminator kit out of one of the mags. Only about $15. Good Luck, Guy

you don't need the cags eliminator kit even for a 96. Unplug it. If you are worried about the connectors getting corroded, puts some electrical protection like the gel or spray stuff and put electrical tape on it. I've seen some people post that you can't just unplug it on a 96. Not true. I have only seen one person post they had an issue with it on a 96. That's one person in six years.

On CAGS equipped cars '96 and later with OBDII, leaving the CAGS unplugged would result in a check engine light. In a location with emissions testing this would mean an automatic failure. If you don't have emissions testing you will be OK. However, if another check engine need would arise, the light is already on and you would not be aware of the new need to make a check. The CAGS plug puts a load across the connector to make the computer think it is still connected thereby keeping the check engine light off for the disconnected CAGS.

I've had my 96 GS unplugged for 3 years and no check engine light, also no more accidental gear clash at low speed:) . My car passes emissions because it Does Not set a trouble code with cags unplugged.

grdsprt -- I wish mine was that way. When my CAGS is unplugged I get a check engine light. Going through the codes, the only one that shows up is for the CAGS being unplugged. Maybe the GM engineers rewrote that part of the software for 97 and newer Vettes.

Just buy the stupid plug thing and do it right the first time. No warnings, no codes, no dirty connectors, no 1 to 4 anymore.

Although this is my sixth Corvette, I'm a little rusty on some of the more recent terms. My 1993 Coupe has this bazarre 1 to 4 contraption and I am wondering what the CAGS means. Also, where can I get a replacement plug and is it simple to do? I owned a 1985 Coupe with the "Four Plus Three" transmission, and I thought that was the ultimate in design stupidity. I guess I was wrong! Thanks, Flyn Lo

Flyn Lo, CAGS -- Computer Aided Gear Selection. It is the "bizarre 1 to 4 contraption" you are talking about. You can get a bypass from any of the late-model suppliers and install it yourself. The bypass costs about $20. Once you get the rear of your car off the ground it only takes about 5-10 minutes to install.

JCS44 -- I HAVE the stupid plug. Was just relating my experiences for the benefit of others.

No offense intended - my comment was directed at those who just unplug it.

Yellow 2002 - Thanks for the reply. I found a replacement plug in the Mid-America on-line catalog for about $14 but it seems to only be a plug to keep dirt out. Will this cause any codes to be generated or the "Service Engine" light to come on? While on the subject of lights, the "Low Tire Pressure" light comes on and I had a shop trace it to the right front tire. The tire is at 40 PSI, so I assume the sending unit is bad. Any thoughts on this? Thanks, Flyn Lo

There's a specific CAGS eliminator plug for 1996 because the on board computure is OBD II. The eliminator has the resistance the computer needs to see and it also disconnects the CAGS, and provides weather protection for the original plugs. The CAGS device will not cause any warning lights. You still get the 1 to 4 light, but that's all. JCS44

Again, not totally true. I unplugged mine and have never thrown a code. I know of others who have unplugged it on a 96 vette. I suggest you try before you go throwing your money away. Like I said in my previous reply, others have had issues, but it does not mean everyone will.

thank you for all your replys

thank you for all your replys. i ordered the bypass kit from mid america and put it on. took less then 10 min. works great and i do not worry about dirt getting in the plug.again thank you all for your help.what a great site for corvette info.

I asked this same question in another thread and was referred to Ecklers by another user for a cags plug seal (www.ecklers.com). If you go there and search "cags", there are several versions. One for 89-95, one for 96 and one for 97 to 04. This plug seals the connection but also makes the computer think the cags is connected and no warning light displays. Cost increases for each later model and when shipping is included, the cable for my 96 is $26.

Missouri does check emissions and on the 96 and later corvettes, they just plug into the corvette's computer and you pass or fail based upon the readings there. I figure if I can elminate that annoying "feature" and insure I pass emissions for $26, it's money well spent.
