Hey guys, been a while since ive been on but i need some help....... the 700r4 i put in my vette died........ 3rd and 4th are no more........ so im thinking to put a 350 or 400 in her........ will the turbo 350 or 400 work with my tranny crossmember, and do the tail housings interchange? meaning will the 700r4 tail housing fit on a t350/400. Also, which one should i go for, 350 or 400....... im at a loss on what to do but i need my baby back on the road!!!!!! or, is there any 700r4's that will do better and withstand 450+ torque/hp?

Thanks guys!!!!!!!!!!

1968-79 manual and automatic transmission cars all used the same propeller shaft pn 378231.

1980-81 automatic transmissions used pn 14014603.

1980-81 manual transmissions used pn 14014606.

1982 (A.T.) used propeller shaft pn 14041083.

The propeller shaft changed in 1980 when the Dana aluminum rear end was introduced, and changed again in 1982 with the introduction of the 700R4.

I am not sure what the difference is between the 1980-81 and 1982 propeller shaft.

The parts book I have does not list the replacement part number for the 1982 transmission support bracket (cross member). The 1980-81 transmission support bracket is pn 475334. 1968-79 automatic cars used transmission support bracket 12300911.

If you want to convert to a TH350 or TH400, you'll need a new crossmember, a new driveshaft (the 700-R4 driveshaft is too short), and a new shifter, to say the least. There are probably some other items that will need replacing, as well.

350 vs 700

I have a 350 trans, driveshft, and crossmember out of my 81 that I don't know what to do with. I am swapping to a 700r4 for the overdrive and 3.05 first gear ratio. Yes a 700 will handle 400-500 horse power when built right. I am building my trans next weekend, and I am about to have my driveshaft cut this week unless you want to swap some stuff. I think it would be in your best interests to have your 700 rebuilt. Let me know. :eyerole

Do some research and look for a place that can upgrade your 82 tranny to the later C4 setup. The 3-4 clutch packs in particular. It'll be cheaper than going to a TH400, with all the changes you'll have to make, plus you'll probably need to go to a lower rearend, with a TH400, the first gear is only about 2.5 compared to the 3.04 gear in the 700r4.

the tranny i have now is, (or was) a stage 2 built 1987 700r4 that i beleive was just not built right. (obviously) im thinking of just buying a new TCI tranny instead of a rebuild. after what happened i can spend the same getting a rebuild or a new one. and i dotn trust anyone for rebuilds anymore.......

anyone know any connections on new trannys other than jegs summit etc etc?
