Need help with a 1972 tachometer problem. I installed a new tachometer cable to eliminate popping sound. After installing the new cable, I can't get the tach to return to 0 when the engine is shut off. Removing the cable from the distributor, rotating the inner cable and reinstalling corrects the problem. Problem starts again after next startup and engine shutdown sequence. Replacement cable is the exact duplicate of the original cable. Lightly pulling on the cable from the engine side will also reset it to 0. Tach seems to work fine during normal driving. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

That is strange.

Any chance that where the cable is routing in past the steering column/pedel mount bulkhead---that is is bound up against the edge there?

I have removed cable several times and reinstalled and the same thing happens. MSD distributor gear is fine and cable has plenty of high temperature lub. Inner cable moves freely. Hooking drill motor to cable operates tach properly. It is possible that there might be a broken piece of the old cable end lodged in the back of the tach, causing the cable to bind. Oh well, another trip under the dash.
