Was the cold-air induction system on the '73 used on both the small block and the big block, or only on the small block?

Joe

It was used on all the engines from '73 through '75 (small and big blocks).

So you're telling me that there is actually cold air induction right into these Vette years? I didn't know that came standard during some Corvette years. I always thought it was just a benefitial mod.

Oh, that's what you guys meant. The cowl induction from the ambient air which, as stated in that link, is cooler.

That's all any cold-air induction system is. It's not so much that ambient air is cold. Rather, it is cold in comparison to the hot under-hood air. The Corvette system is more advanced than most, since it incorporates the throttle-actuated valve to increase the airflow when there is demand. When you aren't pushing the engine, you actually want the warmer air, since it idles better.

This system gives the best of both worlds, as it were. Normal induction when cruising around town, but an instant shot of cold, high pressure (the air right in front of the windshield is pressurized when the car is moving, do to the windshield angle) air into the air cleaner.

So when this valve isn't open and the accelerator isn't all the way down to activate it, isn't there still ambient air going through except doesn't it go under the Vette? Instead of using cowl-air I thought that air was taken from the front and then through the duct to the air filter. Am I wrong?

Thanks! :)

There is a flap in the cowl hood that closes when the car is not at WOT. During those times the car is feed underhood air. Later L82's used a ducted system that took air from the radiator support area and ducted it to the air cleaner assembly.

so do the 74's small blocks have this option?

I don't think it's an option, by what Tom said. I guess it just comes standard? That's what I got out of Tom's comment.
