'74 Engine...Better to have L82 or LS4

I replied to it and I voiced my inner thoughts and feelings as of now. :D

Stallion-remember that if your talking about a 74 454 Vette engine your talking about a toned down BB.They were relatively mild compared to the earlier 427`s and 454`s.I believe they produced about 270 hp. in 74 and 275 hp. in 73.In comparision the 70-71 454`s peaked at over 400 hp. easily.
Like Evolution 1980 said you can do alot of things to a 350 SB to make it sizzle.I built mine up to about 285 hp. for about 2000K.
An agressive cam and raised compression can help alot.
Just some thoughts.
 
Stallion-Your right about the L88.It was a flat out monster!I heard someone say you could burn rubber taking off in 4th gear in those cars.They are probably the most famous of the BB Corvette engine.Equipped with the right headers the L88`s produce about 520hp.Not bad.Chevrolet fudged the HP ratings back then for insurance reasons.
There was one engine even better than the L88.That was the very rare ZL1. This was the Babe Ruth of Corvette powerplants.Aluminum block lightweight 427 CI engine from Hell!With the right rear end ratio and exhaust anyone could bolt through the Quarter mile in 11 seconds or less! This happened with an auto tranny to boot.Only two were sold to the public in 1969.
As far as SB`s go the LT1 of the early 70`s had BB power out of a 350.It was a solid lifter high wiinding fun to drive rocket.It could handle with Porsches.This was the best all around Shark IMO.
 
HP (gross) vs HP (net)

The 70-71 HP ratings are gross (net is 20% less). The 73-74 HP ratings are net.
So the gross rating of the 73-74 BB is about 320 HP! True the older BBs are more powerful but the difference is not as great as you think. Just look at the 0-60 MPH and 1/4 mi. times and the differences between the LS5 and the LS4 are not much. True the LS6 is much more powerful but it also much more expensive!
 
I guess the agressive cam would raise the valves even higher for better and more airflow? Is that the benefit of the agressive cam?
 
When you say "right headers", wouldnt' aluminum headers be best? Air flows over it better, right?

Stallion and basilio, just an FYI so you'll know that the "big block vs. small block" thread has been merged into this one. Since the subject was under discussion in both threads at the same time and since one seemed to have been started as a result of the other, I thought it would save some folks from double posting and keep the information flowing a little more smoothly.

CRs down beginning 71

IN GENERAL ... CRs & cam profiles increased through 1970 ... and began to decrease in 1971. They began to increase once again with the advent of "reliable" computerized ignition & fuel managment systems coupled with more prevalent aluminum heads. Specifically, Vette CRs & profiles also began to drop in 1971.

Remember, in USA readily available good gas was all but gone by 1975. Carmakers prepared for this green-driven eventuality by dropping CRs & profiles.

Can you recall another bellwether change in the way we drove ... occurring soon after the '76 elections?

Aluminum headers are extremely rare ... they generally do not survive typical exhaust temps. Mild steel is the norm ... sometimes coated ... stainless steel is also used but is expensive.

The L88s had a compression ratio of 12.5:1 :eek Then I think it might have been toned down to 10:1 as the specs of the L82s in early-mid 70s.

Comp ratio on L-82s was 9.0:1 except for 79 when it was 8.9:1. L-88s ranged from 12.0:1 to 12.9:1. I found this in the Model Center here in the CAC.
