76 Tire size and dunlop vs BFG

Setting the Record Straight

According to Dunlop's web sight they are a part of Goodyear!

Anyhow I have used M40 and 8000 Dunlops on a Chrysler convertible and found them to be very sticky. They are Z rated and quite soft. Great in the rain and I really never did find their limit on that car yet (225/60/16), but it is high enought to give you a real thrill. The trade off is 40,000 mile tread life.

Stock tires in 76 were 225/70R15. 255/60R15 were optional starting 78 but required fender shaving at factory to clear. Always find out what the diameter of the stock tires are so u can put the same diameter on. this way your speedo will not be inaccurate. just my.02

I have 255/60R15s on my '78 on all fours. Does this mean that I have this option? Hmm...I hope my speedo is accurate. And I guess this means that my fender is properly factory shaved?

Stallion: 225-70R15 and 255-60R15 are about 1% different, so if your speedo should be pretty close :)

Moe: are you sure about the shaving? This is the first I've heard that, and 255-60R15 fits fine on mine, with no visual evidence of fender shaving...

thats what i want on mine , can i do all 4 with the 255s?

i was told the rallys had a different offset and would work with 255s but the aluminum fac. mags would rub ,

input guys?

I'm running factory aluminum rims... :)

Supporting America 100% is more important than good tires, to me.

Don't forget to look at Cooper Tires too. (Hq in Ohio) I have Goodyear GTIIs, looks like many miles to go before a change- But, will certainly look at Cooper when the time comes and for any other vehicles that need tires.

Again, it's an American company, but (like most) who knows where they buy materials and manufacture their products.

Yes Joe I am really sure of that. I read it in one of my Corvette books may even have been in the Corvette Black Book.

just to toss a wrench into this debate. I will never buy a Goodyear tire. Last one started coming apart on me. A 3x3 piece of rubber came off my rear tire on the way to the airport. Steel belts showing thru. They were worn, but i would have never thought that worn.

anyways, i went with a set of Kelly Chargers 225/70R/15. Should have got the 255's but didn't feel like driving around for a few more days on a temp tire.

So far i like them. Good grip in rain. I wish they were a bit softer, as i can get all four sliding if i dive into a corner too hard.

ty guys , i am almost ready for tires too , of course i want to fill the wheel wells as much as possible , but i don't want to scrub.

My 255s fit like a charm. I don't know how different our fenders can be, from '77 to '78, though.

one way to find out , i am still running the eagle st 225 70 15, they will need replacing b 4 long, they are at least 8 years old.. but in good shape prob have 5000 miles left on them
