78 auto trans shift knob removal

How do you remove the knob on an 78 auto transmission. I am replacing the center console and need to remove the knob. I'm replacing the shift boot as well. Also the shift boot has 4 screws but the replacement boot doesn't have holes for the crews. Is this a self tapping screw kinda thing or what??

I purchased the boot from ecklers.

Not sure about your '78, but my '74 unscrews like anything else... lefty loosy/righty tighty.

I used a strap wrench to unscrew the knob on my '79. I also, was replacing the boot. I used self tapping screws to secure it. The hardest thing I found was stretching it to fit the console. It was not very cooperative.

Both the silver button and black knob unscrew off counterclockwise. Try using a tacky cloth or one of those rubber jar openers you can get at the dollar store.
