The clear coat on the roof panels of my 78 SA is slowly peeling away.
Just the roof panels, it looks terrible and I was wondering if there was any
way I could speed the process along without damaging the color coat beneath
it? Has anyone encountered this circumstance before? Any help appreciated.
Maybe come Spring I'll have the tops refinished

I'm not a paint expert by any means so maybe someone who is will chime in but here's my $.02. Once clear starts to be worn down, you're pretty much stuck with sanding and repainting. I have a car with pretty bad clear coat around the fenders and a fellow from Meguires looked at it two years ago and told me there was nothing I could do to help it.

By the way, if it's the original 78 paint, it shouldn't have clear coat, they were sprayed with lacquer (?sp). Clear coat wasn't applied until Bowling Green took over. If it is clear coat, how old is the respray?

Saw the post...

...but had no insight to help.

My 78's paint was horrible, cracking all over the hood, tops and rear deck. We repainted 2 years ago with clear coat over all, no edges at the stripes.

Your Paint

If your car was repainted in 87 to 88 time frame that may explain it. Those clear coates back then couldn't stand up to UV rays...they break down and peal.

By the way does or did your Silver Anniv. have or come with an AIR pump? Do you know if they all did?

thanks to all that applied. The car was repainted by the original owner sometime between 85 and 90. No smog pump. I vaguely remember the original owner telling me the car was purchased in Arizona and registered in California
