78 s/a paint with oyster leather l82 auto
hey everyone, I am new to the board. I have a 1978 silver anniversary car, auto and oyster interior. My speedometer died the other day, I have replaced the lower cable and the circuit board on the speedo and tach. Got the tach operating.
Any suggestions on the speedo? Going to replace top cable but it looks ok. Is it the tranducer? Also I have lost my signal indicators in the das as well as the high beam indicator. Should the new circuit board have repaired this ? All bulbs in the dash panel are good.

Any help appreciated. Looking forward to some good chatting.

One of the most common causes of speedo failure is the transducer freezing and breaking the bottom cable. There is a plastic piece on one of the ends and it snaps off. Check the cable. If broken, get a new transducer and replace both.

thanks for the reply, i gues i am due a transducer best price i have seen so far is 80 plus shipping and handling.

Check with NAPA and perhaps other car parts stores. I've heard they sell rebuilt transducers...

My 78 needed a transducer recently (no cruise control)and I got a good price from autozone. This was not my speedo problem. The gear inside the trans tail shaft had gone bad. I kept replacing drive gears and even the drive carriage because it had actually worn an oval into the bushing but until I replace the plastic gear inside the trans my speedometer would work occasionally.

thanks for the replies. i do have cruise and napa wants about 80 dollars for their transducer. i will check my trans. terminal as well.
wish it was as simple as my 1970 chevy truck.

again thanks

You might do a search on ebay for the transducer. I have bought many hard to find NOS part there at a good price. Welcome to CAC!
