My 82 with cross fire injection has come up with a hiccup. I stopped at a stop light about a month ago and she idled down and cut off (96 degrees outside). She wouldn't crank right back up, but 3 minutes later everything was fine and I drove away. Over the last month, she has done this 3 times. I changed the fuel filter, checked the fuel pump working ok (I have another and will replace), replaced thermostat with a 160 (took out the 195), replaced the belts, checked coolant, and it did it again on Friday (87 degrees outside). My next step was to insulate the fuel line near the block. I'd appreciate any and all help.

I had a problem with mine cranking but not firing. This happened after sitting for a month. maybe your fuel relay is going bad. That's what turned out to be wrong with mine. Jut a suggestion.

Are you really sure it's a fuel problem? I went to start mine and it hickuped once and then would not fire, not even cough once. I let it sit for about 2 min. with the key off, turned the key and it fired and ran great. My suspicion is that the on-board computer gets a spike and needs to reset itself. I had heard this many years ago but never had any proof and maybe I still don't but it worked.
If you have a strong fuel oder then you are probility right about the vapor lock.:hb

Those intermittent problems are a major pain.

Just wondering...did you get a Check Engine light at any point?

Some other possible culprits:

CTS connector, the original connectors did not work well. If the CTS signal gets screwed up the ECM will have a $h_t fit.

IAC valves not working properly.

Throttle Bodies unbalanced

Minimum air setting

Just a couple of thoughts....

Probably not vapor lock. Enough fuel goes to the TBs, to where the extra is returned to the tank.

Check for codes. You have a manual?

Let us know.
:w

A similar thing

Remove the TB electrical connectors, clean the pins.. check female connector, reseat.

Before putting the air cleaner back on start the car... fuel squirting?

Well that's one less thing!

Could be Ign ( Coil )

Do not thing Vapor lock... think bad relay for pump.

Next time it poops out check for spark & fuel delivery.

Vig!

Thanks for all of the suggestions. When it happens again I'll do some checking.

geekinavette - yes the check engine light did come on for about a minute one, once.

When it happens, it just cuts off (when I come to a stop) and will fire right back up in about 2-3 minutes, but not right after it cuts off.

I had posted a similar problem a few days ago. My 82 just quit at idle and would not start. I narrowed it down to "no fuel pressure". After checking the fuel pump, injectors fuses, Dist module, etc. I found a fuse on the very top of the fuse panel marked "FP" which I figured it to be "Fuel Pump" dahhh. It was very dirty so I cleaned it and put it back in and it started and is running great. Just a thought.......

You need to retrieve the trouble code(s) from the ECM. That'll help alot.
