I bought one of those plastic, paint-to-match dash covers from Mid-America Designs for my 82 to hide my badly cracked original dash. To install it, I need to remove the headlight switch knob and bezel, loosen the center console and it basically will slide right into place. My Haynes manual says that to remove the headlight switch I will need to remove the lens covering the speedometer/tachometer, then unfasten the speedometer and the speedometer cable (!) to gain access to the other stuff that keeps the headlight switch connected. Is all this really necessary to get that knob out of the way so I can put my new dash cover on? Is there an easier way?
By the way ... those dash covers are pretty nice and look just like the original dash, except that you have to paint it to match. But Mid-America has paint in stock colors for specific model years, and the dark blue for 82 matches my car's interior perfectly. I applied a couple of coats of the paint at first and it looked kind of splotchy when it dried, but the next day I put on a final coat and it came out nice and smooth, and looks exactly like my original dash, but without the cracks.
