When I bought my 82 last year, the smog pump was inoperable and the belt was off, and I have driven the car that way ever since without a problem. Is there a good reason to have a working smog pump? I was told once that all it did was rob horsepower from the engine. I was also told that without it, the "check engine" light would stay on almost continuously. I'm curious to know what difference this part makes when it is working.
