seems like the problem is a vacuum issue? I heard this is a common problem. HELP

A little more info is needed. If you mean restart after it is hot my 84 used to do that when I first got it. Was a combination of weak fuel pump, out of sync TB's and tps sensor. Had all 3 of those taken care of and the car runs like a scalded dog.

Yes exactly, after its hot. It will restart but I have to feather the gas peddle for 30sec to 1min then it seems to work through it.

I replaced most all of the vacuum lines to the EGR and EGR solonoid. I had both EGR components checked and both seem OK.

I did discover my thermostat was bad, so I think heat was an issue. Starter and battery are brand new as of today. 20 minute test drive twice today and problem did not occur - still sceptical.

Thanks for the reply, the items you mentioned are next on my list.

Have you looked to see if the throttle bodys are pumping fuel when this hard start occurs? I had an 84 once that had two separate problems that caused hot start problems.

1. There is something called a tach filter on the distributor. When this goes bad, the tach doesn't register, if the tach won't register, the fuel pump won't provide fuel, apparently because the computer doesn't know the engine is cranking.

2. When the water level is too low, (I had a leaky water pump) and the engine is hot, the computer won't let the fuel pump run. If I poured gas in the injector it would start and run in both of the instances mentioned above.

Hope you find and correct the problem soon.

My suggestions...

Set TPS (Throddle Position Sensor)
Remove and Clean the IAC's (Idle Air Control)
Replace O2 Sensor
Replace Temp Sensor (the one in the front of the pass head)

I am also wondering if your CAT is starting to clog up and get worst as it heats up.
