84 Custer Display - Again.......

I know this has been beaten death but I need help with a cluster repair. I have read and tried to digest all the repair links. My original problem was the usual display goes out and the signal and hi beam indicators come on. I read all the info - pulled the cluster and found the dicolored pin connectors just like described. I cleaned them - made sure the connection was good - checked the sodder joints - put everything back together and turned the key. To my surprise it worked perfect - until the car is driven for 10 - 15 minutes. Then the dispaly goes dark. In daylight you can still see it - but it's dim. At night you can't see it at all. The ground concern seems to be fixed - no more indicator lights coming on but what did I miss? Is there something I can still do or should I just give in and get a rebuilt cluster? Sounds like a bad ground...do a search at the top of this page for "digital dash ground" ...you will find quite a bit of information, including running new grounds and splicing into the old ground.

I had the same problem in my '84. After looking through the suggestions in the link above, and the many threads here, mine turned out to be due to the cold solder joints on the pins that link the two boards; specifically the pin that went to the LEDs. I just dabbed a little solder on the pin, and voila.

Thanks for the responses - looks like it's the cold solder joints on the back of the pins. Should I just touch them all with a small dab and is running that extra ground a good idea? Again thanks to all of you for your help. Jack

No it's a trip to Radio Shack for the cold soder gun about $20.00 and lots of light and lots of time just don't drop the thing ,the ground is a must and the wire plugin behind the center of the dash also comes unpluged that one is alot of work to get to /

Worked for me. Re-routing the ground wouldn't hurt, but I found filling the cold solder joints was what permanently fixed my dark dash display.
