Good afternoon to all, I have a 84 vette with a horn problem. I replaced the steering column and connected the single yellow wire from inside the column to the clip on the back of the horn cap and I have no horn. The 15 amp fuse is fine, the 10 amp fuse behind the center console is fine. I tried to ohm out the horn relay, but I'm not sure what reading I should be getting. I should mention the horns are good. Also the column that was repalced had just a dangling single piece of wire that was apparently jimmied by the previous owner. Any input is appreciated.
Thank you,
Brimis

I recently did the same thing and when all was put back together, no horn. Did your horn work before you pulled the column? Is there voltage to the yellow wire? If you unclip the wire and touch it to any surrounding metal you should get the horn, if so, it's the horn button assyl that is not snapped back into place correctly.

Hope this helps a little....:w

Did you remove the steering wheel? If so that big spring needs to be placed into the hole where that little (yellow) wire goes through the column. (I know from experience) :( Also just grounding that wire should make the horn blow. There is another fuse behind the center instrument panel for the alarm system. If that one is blown the horn won't blow. If you need a diagram let me know, I'll scan one for you.

Hey I have a related question. My horns are flaking out, so I ordered two horns and a horn relay. Before I replace horns that might be good, where is the horn relay located?

O this might help, maybe your horn relay is bad.

BTW I replaced my steering wheel (very expensive) and horn button, but the horn was still flakey bad connection.

JonM,
The original column was shot, when I removed the horn button there was a single piece of wire connected to nothing and I had no horn. The spring you are referring to, is it long and thin? If so I can only assume its in the small hole where the yellow wire is. I looked at one on Eckler's site. I installed the column as one unit and you can see the wire sticking out of the hole. Again I can only assume its there. I will check the fuse for the alarm system.
Thank you,
Robert

Magmotor, no I never had a horn since day one. I will check for voltage and ground the wire. I'll cross my fingers.
Thank you,

JonM/Magmotor, I have no voltage at the yellow wire and no horn when I ground the wire. I'll check the security fuse.

OK, simple test here. Does your Theft system work??? If so...that tells you a lot: the main fuse is good, the relay is good, the horns are good & the inline fuse to the theft mod is good. So what is left is the yellow wire back to the relay has an open in it. Take a long wire and connect it to the + battery. open the door and and run it to the metal bracket clips where the horn fits in. You should hear the horns when you touch.......if this is the case you now know what has to be done in order to get your horn working.....keep us posted..!! :w

Magmotor, thank you, the alarm does not work. I will test this evening after work.

I see a relay located on the inner firewall in front of the master cyclinder, but it is not what MidAmerica set me. The connectors are different. Any advice?

Gray…I must apologize, I think that relay is for the fans. (brain fart here) The relay for the horn is located behind the center instrument panel or on the bundle of wires coming off the fuse panel. You would have to remove the hush panel under the passenger side to get at it. You may want to do a search or post another thread to make sure of the location on YOUR car. My manual has the relay for my car in both places. ;shrug

Here's the relay location: right behind the radio. Are your fuses good???? If your Theft sys isn't working then there's a good chance that this relay is no good. Both systems go thru it so go ahead and replace the relay.

JonM,-------do you have a schematic show ing the pin number of the coil on the horn realy??? If he ran a wire from that pin out to ground, he should have a horn, giving the relay is good, the fuse is good & the horns. The Theft mod inline fuse should be isolated from the horn system and shouldn't have anything to do with the horn. It's there just to protect the theft mod. But like I said above, if both systems arn't working then good chance the relay has gone south.

I checked under the hood, on under either side of the dash, but not behind the radio. It should figure, the only place I didn't look. O wait I didn't look behind the gauges.

Thanks for all the advice, I'll let know how it went. BTW some of the parts sheets are great, where did you get them? I see on e-bay they sell something call part sheets/listings is that what you have.

Fixed the horn problem. In my 85 I took out the guage switch thing (above the radio) and sure enough the relay and fuse was there. replaced the relay then noticed that the fuse was bad. Replace the fuse and hit he horn, still the whimpy sound. Replaced the horns, life is good again.

When I took the horn out and shook it, it rattled! I guess what happened was the horn went bad and was pulling too much volts, so the fuse went.

Thanks for all the help, I was able to fix my problem thanks to you all.

JonM, thanks for the files. BTW what happened to your pictures?

Thanks to Magmotor and his patience;) we found out my ground wire inside the steering column was not grounded. I need to order a horn contact wire. I also thank JonM for the horn diagram.;) I'm hoping one day I can in turn help a fellow member.:w
