Have an 84 and it runs great. The seams on the leather drivers seat finally split. Took it to several places and they would not sew the seats. To old and brittle.
I see several websites with cloth seat covers, replacemtent leather covers, replacment vinyl covers, as well as prebuilt foam.
Thoughts and recommendations with replacing the seat covers and/or foam?
These are standard seats and the leather is red.
Many of the websites don't list red leather as an option. Is this rare?
6 months ago I had my seats recovered, I chose vinyl, but I am not sure I made a good decision. I bought the covers from Corvette Central and had a local guy put them on. I paid $200 for installation, but he did a good job. I think the covers were between $300 and $400. I am told the vinyl will last longer. It is really hard to tell the difference. On place I called and talked to the person, told me they sell vinyl 3 to 1. I am pretty well pleased with the vinyl so far.
Joe 84, I replaced the ones on my 84 last year. After much debate I just bit the big one and bought the leather seat covers mounted on new foam. I bought them from Corvette Central, they had all the stock colors covered. You can even get the perforated ones if you choose. Installation was a snap, just pop the old backs and bottoms out and the new ones in. It wasn't cheap, just easy. They look great. 84 CF 91 ZR-1
Im doing a different route because I know the type of leather that go's into cars and what is actually available.....
(If you know the Ford King Ranch trucks this is the leather)
Super thick hide leather any color I choose installed is going to come out at 450$ CND (Like 250 US?) for the pair.
Leathers a cheap item and I don't see how these catalogs are charging 900 for Driver (Not so great) leather and 1200 for ""Good"" Leather. When I can get the best leather you can get (Aside from wierd exotics) for 1/6 the price...Somethings wrong with that picture Im sorry
Foam..Cmon now its FOAM they can cut a piece for seats for very cheap...
I found in this instance its better (IMHO) to shop out of the automobile avenue and into the real world. The foam will be good if not better (Because YOU can choose your density) and the leather is well <<BETTER>>
If you don't know the King Ranch Trucks the texture and hide thickness is similar to HIGH end leather couches (Natuzzi etc..)
I do believe Ford is also using this leather on the Harley Edition F150's but Im not sure...
(BTW Not a Ford fan but in this case WOW the leather is to die for)
Take your car to a ordinary leather shop and see how much you'll be VERY surprized unless he decides to smoke you because its a car and you have no where else to go. What you can do incase your worried about this asumption is go into the store and ask for a "rough" quote on a kitchen chair or Bar chair tell him the approx measurements and draw a ROUGH picture of the areas getting covered that will tell you truly how much this is. (I used Recliner chairs as my example)
I find alot of times in the automotive world stupid cheap parts are stupidly expensive but in most cases you have to bite the bullet and take it like a man but I feel in this avenue the car world doesn't have to have you by the you know whats...
My 2 Cents and of course MHO
(Looking to get this done on my car for a Christmas present we'll see)
Note* Go look at a Jaguar and look carefully at the leather trust me Domestic Companys don't have a clue on the most part.
I got a break on the jet seats. I was at the Ecklers show in 96 and at the scratch and dent sale they had the four cloth covers, right color for $100. There wasn't anything wrong with them that I could see. I bought the bull dog install kit too. I didn't have the right tools and time to do it myself so I took the passenger bottom and back to a hole in the wall shop and for $25 each they installed with additional foam. Replaced the old driver side with the new seats and gave him the old to do. So for $200 bucks I got the job done and am very pleased. Now that was cloth and I don't know about leather. Just watch your prices. The shop is still in business and doing well.
While your doing the seat covers, add some seat warmers. I don't know where to get them if doing the job yourself, but my local upolstery shop advertises them.
