85 Automatic Question

The shifting seems "soft" on my '85. It has 45K miles and I just bought it a week ago. By "soft" I mean it seems to "slide" into the next gear - it's not a firm shift. Is this normal? Fluid level is good and clean.

Have you tried adjusting the TV cable? This is the throttle valve adjustment cable on the plenun. This should firm up your shift points as long as the fluid level you have is correct. Do a search and look for tv adjustment and you should be able to pull up many articles. If not go to www.corvetteforum.com and do a search under there. Good luck....

My 84 shifts so hard it feels like it may twist the driveshaft at times!!!


I never had an automatic shift this firm. I have a 93 F250 diesel with a E4OD trans and I added an electronic shift kit.....it ain't even close to the Vette in firmness.

You can look at the throttle and you will see the cable the part that you have to adjust looks like a D it is silver I think you have a 700r4 ?
Push in the silver D and push the cable all the way in to the fire wall with your fingers ,release the D silver you can push it with a screw driver or your finger.
After that go inside the car and mash the gas pedel and it will be set.
I usually push the black center piece in just an 1/8 inch or 1/16 more for a harder shift.

Transmission Update

Had my mechanic do a complete inspection on the car including the transmission. They adjusted the TV cable and said it seems to be shifting normally. I suppose, some of my concern may be because I'm comparing the shifting to my Silverado PU or my wifes Regal. So I'll live with it a while and see how things go.
