The 87 style headlite actuator has internal limit switches that respond to the motor torque to know when to shut off when they are operated. There are 3 relays that can also effect this...
Rule out the relays by finding the 2 that are the same and trade them. If the problem does not move then its not relays.
If you determine that it IS the motors, the trick is to make certain the shaft spring is set correctly so that the motor shaft can pull back & forth to operate the limit switches...
The switches can get burned so they may need adjustment but save that for the last thing...its often trial & error since you have to run the motor to test the adjustment. I can tell you that you want to make the switches as easy to open as possible...not more tension. So the shaft can bump the switch easily and not run on and on..
If the motor has been opened recently, I can assure you that its the spring plate thats in the wrong slot...
thanks for your help i will try this the motors are both new 1 this year and 1 last year they were both working ok then 1 went and the other started about 2 months later will try new relays parts are dear here and i find Ecklers best order monday and i get them thursday morning thanks again
hi thanks i do want 2 relays if you let me know details and how much i will send you cheuqe or phone me on 07776158338 as i am in surrey thanks delboy
Delboy, As Boomdriver said, you should try swapping the two motor relays to see if the problem follows the relay or stays with the headlight motor before you buy a new relay. There are actually three relays for the headlights. Two motor relays and one isolation relay. The two motor relays are the same and so are interchangable for testing; the isolation relay is different. Swap the motor relays to see if that is actually the problem. If the relay is bad, get back to me and I'll send you one. I only have one motor relay and one isolation relay in my stock. Let me know what you find out when you swap the relays. They are located behind a cover, mounted on the front side of the LH wheel well.
hi i have tried the 2 motor relays both ok so it looks like it is the isolation relay could i please buy it from you and thanks for your help delboy
the 2 headlight motors are new and were working ok if you send me your details i will put a cheque in the post to you for isoltion relay or phone me on 07776158338 thanks delboy
Delboy, I'm fairly certain the Isolation Relay is not your problem. I only mentioned it to give you a complete view of all the parts that make up the system. But it's your money. Send me a PM with your address and I'l post you the Isolation Relay. Send it back if it's not your problem.
Ray
Hi Ray have posted isolation relay back to you posted it friday thanks for all your help headlights still the same delboy
dont know if anyone is interested but there are brand new motors for the 87 for sale on FleaBay..
I just saw those yesterday when searching for something else.
Sorry it didn't help, but as I said, I was fairly certain it wouldn't. You said the motors were no more than two years old. Where did you get them? I don't get down to Surrey much, so can't actually give you any hands on assistance, but perhaps one of the CCCUK members in the area can. Did you say if you were a member or not?
Hi ray did you get the relay back? thanks again i got the motors new from Ecklers no not a member of cccuk i prefer a club with with all makes of cars i am in the V8 Mentalists you will find us on facebook over 300 of us all over england i,ve got over 3000 pics on my site check it out let me know what you think im on FB every day to check out car events if you are on there send me a FR o well mate be lucky all the best Delboy
