90 electric seats

On my passengers seat all the seat functions work like, the lumbar, and tilt, and raising and lifting the seat except for the forward and backward. When i hit the switch the motor makes a sound like its working. I looked at taking the seat apart because i suspect somthing is stuck in the track. Does anybody know how to take it appart? There are alot of rivots in it..... Also on one of the tracks right by a gear there is a piece of red plastic....i dont know if its supposed to be there...i suspect this might be stoping the gear from turning. Any help would be great because i am all out of ideas at the momeny.

I just want to say that the site is great so far!! Good to have a place like this for vette owners!

I think the 90 still uses the "speedometer cable" type of drive out of the motor.

Any chance it's buggered up?

I had the same problem. The seat track gears are probably stripped. You can shop around for a rebuilt...they are around $209 U.S. at the supply houses like
Corvette America.

I see that you're also from Canada...I'm in Vancouver. E-mail me if you go the rebuilt route. I am still in the process of fixing up mistakes in GST and brokerage fees due to mistakes in invoices from Corvette America.

I am not quite sure on the 90 type seat

but on the 84-89 type seat there is a metal grip on the front of the seat

just reach your hand down on the front and feel this grip, I loosened it with a screwdriver but when you have kung-fu fingers It could be done by hand.

when that grip is loose you can take out the seat cover bottom.

On the standard seats, push down on the front of the seat cushion and release the wire retainer. This is required if the seat is to be removed from the car, as well, to access an electrical connector.

Check integrity of the 'speedo cable' drive mechanism before assuing the gear is bad, as already mentioned. Such was the source of failures in other power seats I have fixed.

The plastic gears in the aluminum clamshell are the weak link. There must be a source for the parts since people are selling rebuilt units.

The gears and the spacers in the gearbox are made of a plastic that doesn't hold up. I've had a couple of the boxes apart and tried to put together one good unit from a combination of the "best" looking parts, but it didn't hold up long before it started slipping again. Just drill out the rivets and the gearbox will pop open like a clamshell. I used rivets to close it back up again.

thanks for the replies guys. It turns out the plastic gear inside is all worn out. I dont understand why they put a plastic gear with a metal one. Does anyone where u can just get parts instead of the whole unit?
