which engine set up is the eases to maintain, cheapest to keep running? my friends tell me that the LT1 can only be worked on by a mechanic and that their VERY expensive: like $1,500 for a tune up where as the L98 tune up can be done by any competent person. the chevy manual gives a chevy mech 8HRS to change spark plugs on a LT1 vs 3 HRS on a L98. over $600 to change a water pump on a LT1vs $200 on a L98. are these facts true?
thanks boonie

Honestly, there are both about the same when it comes to repair time and difficulty. It all tends to even out. I have owned both and work on my own cars. I've repaired stuff on both like the intake gasket leaks, tune up, change wires, spark plugs, water pumps, etc. If you really want examples then let me know. Or you can just take my word for it.
Well here's just a few.

Tune Ups: There is no cap and rotor to change on a LT1. There is on a L98. The wires are a little harder to replace on a LT1. Spark plugs are the same.

Intake Gasket repair: The LT1 is allot easier, less parts to take off and buy and nothing really in the way. Not true for the L98.

Water Pump: about the same.

Your friend states the LT1 needing a mechanic for repairs is a really ignorant comment. Shows he knows nothing about this.

your friend probably heard about the LT1 opti-spark nightmare from someone who does not know about cars.the opti-spark is no big deal.i owned an L98,now an LS1,this is the easiest motor ive ever worked on.the computer is a different story.i have my scanning skills up to pace, now i need to play with LS1 edit.the L98 is probably cheaper to buy parts for but i dont know for sure,i never owned an LT1.my friend has one in a 96 but has never had to buy parts for it yet,it also looks very easy to work on.go to this forum for advise, and tell your friend thanks for the input and blow it off.
later,Todd.

I've worked on both and the L98 is a little easier in my opinion, an opti-spark change is the big tune up difference, L98 takes 10 minutes to do cap and rotor, Lt1 takes a few hours. It is true though as earlier posted that the lt1 intake is a lot easier to work on but this is rarely needed. the computer on lt1's affect more than L98's which make it a little different. I think plugs and definately wires are harder on the lt1. As far as cost the lt1 will probably be more. the 94-96 c4 has several oxygen sensors compared to 1 on the L98, several other stuff..... The block and internals are essentially the same. If I were you I really wouldn't consider the differences when choosing, they are too close.
