I just bought a 93 Ruby convertible Saturday at Carlisle PA with 34,000 miles and shortly therafter the Climate Control started acting weird. It seems to lock up and won't let me change modes. I can't adjust the temperature except after pushing heat and then I can adjust only up. I can't even shut it off. I tried the reset procedure in the Owners Manual, pulling courtesy light and radio fuses for a minute, and I also pulled the 2 marked A/C Programmer. The first time I did the reset it did work for a few button pushes, then it locked up. I did the reset again and it stayed locked. Is there a simple fix or do I need a several hundred part? What part would that be, the control head in the dash or something else? Any suggested sources?

RonV87,

My ‘94 had the same affliction with the climate control buttons.

I looked into it and found it was the head that would need to be replaced. A remanufactured head unit is available through Chevy dealers. If you turn in your head unit, you will receive a discount (core charge).

I, don’t have the part number, but it was available at the parts department.

One suggestion... if you decide to purchase through a Chevy dealer, shop around! I found one for $175.00. On the high side, dealers were quoting me up to $225.00 for the same exact part.

The same thing on my Ruby... If you pull the temp controller out and take the face plate off and clean all the conectors pins it will most likely work I did that to mine and now it works great no trouble for the past year since then. I used a electrical componet cleaner in a arisol can. I found the fix here in the forums so also try a search. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any more ????

Good luck

I just bought a 93 Ruby also and the temp acted just like yours. Cleaning the contacts didn't help for long, so I just replaced it with a new GM unit. Total cost for parts and labor was $250. The car has 13K miles on it. Also see if your lumbar seats will pump up. I'll bet they don't work either. If not, I have a cheap easy fix. Also check to see if the CD player works. Mine didn't. Can you see the things I've had to fix already in the last 3 weeks? But that's still the fun of owning a vette!!

Thanks Dan and dbooth.
Yesterday I pulled the control head and cleaned the contacts on the connector between the front PC board and the bigger main board, cleaned the contacts on the wire harness connector to the control head, wiped the surface of the switch contacts under the membrane switches on the front of the front PC board, and reheated about 4 solder joints that looked suspicious like maybe cold solder joints. Reinstalled it and it works ok. Don't know for how long but it works. Maybe I saved myself $200. It wasn't very hard to get out.
The garage just called and said I passed Maryland State inspection with no problems so I can get it titled and registered this week. So I'm very happy!!
Next I plan on finding sources for a new Ruby convertible top. I heard the sources are drying up and I'm thinking of buying one and putting it away till needed. Know of any sources?:v

For dbooth - The cd player works! THe lumbar pump on the passenger seat started making a loud noise after my wife pushed some buttons on our way home after buying the car. I had to disconnect the connector to it under the seat. It seemed to stick on even after shutting off the car. Haven't checked the driver's side yet. I saw that they sell a rebuild kit for $39 in either Mid America or Ecklers, can't remember which. I'm interested in your solution.

Ron

Ron, the lumbar rebuild kits are not available from Ecklers, Mid America, Corvette Central or any other source including GM. They are in the books, but no longer available when you call them. Can't buy the whole pump either. Looks like someone would start reproducing them to me, but I was told that GM won't release the rights to an aftermarket supplier. The supplier that originally supplied these to GM went out of business and GM has the patent rights to it. Anyway, there is an easy fix that works. Take the bottom seat cushion off and you can get to the pump assembly very easily. Remove the whole pump assy from the seat base and tear it apart. You will find that there is a diaphram with a piston attached that builds the pressure in the lumbar bladder. The problem is the diaphram. Buy a pair of latex gloves like you use for dishwashing or cleaning around the house. I paid $2 for mine at Wal-Mart. They have plenty of stretch in them for making a new diaphram. Just use the old parts for a template and cut out a new diaphram and poke a hole in the center for the piston. Reinstall on the seat and you'll be set. I did the passenger side in about 45 minutes total not knowing what I was doing. Then went to the driver side and did it in 30 minutes. They work great and I'm told they last for several years before needing a new diaphram made again. Cheap fix and at this point about the only solution until someone reproduces the pumps again. Glad your CD player works now. I had Dr. Don's in Texas do mine. Came recommended from other owners and they did a great job on it. $150 charge and they only had it 2 days. Good luck!! Dave

Dave - Thanks for the info on how to fix the lumbar pump.:BOW

Ron

Ya thanks for the info on the seat I,m going to try that this weekend I also had Dr Dons do my cd player and also works great
Thanks Dan:Steer

Re CD player: Remember not to leave CDs in the Bose during summer heat. There is a small rubber piece on the head that can fuse to the CD, ruining the unit.

Thanks for the Bose tip, hadn't heard that one.
