I have not driven my car much lately but have noticed that in the last couple of days when in slow traffic or at stop the coolant temp goes up to almost 260. The fans aren't kicking on. My coolant level appears to be ok. I checked the fuses and they are ok. Anyone know what might be causing this? What could be causing the fans not to kick on. Shouldn't they run even after the car is turned off? When cruising down the highway it runs above the 185 degree mark about half way between the 185 and the next mark. My gauge has the 185 mark, three slashes, and then 260. What are the degrees at the other slashes.

Thanks

Just wondered if I did something wrong when registering? I see a lot of guys are looking at my question but no posts in re

tlchill@siu.edu, you haven't done anything wrong. Someone will chime in here soon so do have patience. Meanwhile, check out the search function up at the top. There has been much discussion and a lot of good feedback regarding this same topic.

I wonder if it is a fan relay or maybe the fan motor itself? I'm not exactly sure, but that may be a start.
My '90 uses analogue gauges for the temp so I'm not sure what the actual running temp is.

First check all the usual suspects. Full of coolant, etc.

Use the "Guages" button and check the digital readout of temp - it's supposed to be more accurate (!)

Then follow up on the fan relays, etc. as already mentioned.

Does the fan come on with the A/C?
The main fan comes on around 232*
Check the digital gauge like TUNA said.
I can sit there at idle with the hood open and let the temp rise and my main fan comes on at 232* like I mentioned.

BTW...Welcome to the Forum.

Mine didn't work correctly when I got mine either heres what I did-checked to make sure I had power to the switches-next switched the switches around-still o.k? if so take a hot wire from your switch and touch it to the fan contact(s) if the fan goes on the problem is in between. If not something is wrong with the fan itself. If you invest in a shop manual(a real one-not a hayes)you will find a proceedure for checking just about anything.I find mine to be invaluable.Sometimes the temp. sending unit can be bad also .I found that even after I fixed mine it would still act up but after I put in a speed chip in it cleared up.I hope some of this helps- Dennis :w

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM ON MY 96. I REPLACED THE SENSOR, AND THAT DIDN'T WORK. YOU CAN JUMP YOUR RELAYS AND SEE IF YOU ARE GETTING POWER TO YOUR FANS. MINE TURNED OUT TO BE THE RELAYS ( ON THE DRIVERS SIDE NEXT TO THE RADIATOR ) NOW THE FANS KICK ON AT 228. FIRST I WOULD TURN ON THE AC AND MAKE SURE YOUR CIRCUIT TO THE FANS IS WORKING. THE MEMBERS OF THIS FORUM LED ME RIGHT TO THE PROBLEM. HOPEFULLY THEY WILL DO THE SAME FOR YOU.
