1st: Am I going to need a "puller" to remove the water pump?
2nd: Will I need to remove or swing the AC compressor away to gain
access to the pump? I've been reading some conflicting info from
different sources. Maybe I'm confusing earlier C4's with my '94. Anyway, I don't want to return to the dealership, whom I think caused the problem in the first place, if this is a pretty easy fix. At my age, 67 in JUly, and with failing eyesight, I might have no choice. Your thoughts.
Thankyou.

You don't have to even touch the AC other than removing the belt!!:thumb
But I'd take it back to the dealer,I believe GM dealers warrants the repairs for 3 Y/36,000 M!!:thumb:thumb:thumb

Water Pump

The water pump is no big deal. I have had mine off to replace the plug wires. Off to replace the opti twice.(had a bad replacement opti ) Intake manifold twice. Currently I have the left half shaft out replacing U joints. and as for your age. This year I will be 70. If you think you can do it you can.:thumb

Most of the bolts are hard to see and I had to go by feel so your eyesight should not be a problem

Replacing/removing a LT1 water pump isnt that hard. Wheni replaced the one on my '96 Camaro (same engine as your vette) It was very cramped, but we didnt need any pullers to get it off.

I will be replacing a the water pump on my 94 vette myself soon, and the process is similar to the camaro. I would sepect to you would just need some very good lighting since the pump is only accessible from the top in our cars. I would imagine you need to remove the intake plumbing, followed by the serpentine belt. I had to remove the ignition coil on my camaro, but not sure if its the same on the vette engines. Some precautions before tackling the problem, if you wish to preserve your optispark/distributor, i reccommend getting some rags/towels to place on the the distributor. This way when you remove the water pump, you dont get water/coolant all over it and potentially damage your distributor. Also be sure to get some Water pump RTV sealant for the new gaskets and a new t-stat would be recommended, stock temp is 180 F i believe. Also dont forget to bleed the system properly as well.

Hope some of this helps and good luck, whatever your decision is.

Just remember there are 6 bolts on the w/p 4 long and 2 short. The pass side are easy. The long ones on the driver side are ok but the short one has the p/s pulley blocking your view. Not a hard job at all :D

As for eye sight, I wear bifocals and under most conditions working on a Vette I got to go by feel because ya just can't seem to cock your head back enough to use the bifocal :mad

Don't forget to seal the bolt threads as a couple penetrate the water jacket.

And another thing. Let the top radiator hose off while filling the system until some anti freeze comes out the hose, then connect the hose. This will eliminate alot of air prior to bleeding the system.

$788!!! what a rip off!!! I spent $135.00 for a new duralast waterpump with a lifetime warranty. And around $20-$30 on a new thermostat, water pump RTV sealant, and coolant. and spent maybe a afternoon to replace my pump in the camaro. These shop/dealer prices are getting outrageous.

Aint this a wonderful country!
