95' Rear Braake Pads R & R

I'm replacing my 95's rear brake pads and the FSM says something about removing the emergency brake lever or something. But I also remember some forum members did it without messing with the E.B. Lever / Cable?
Anyone know the scoop on this? I don't want to do any un-neccessary steps if I don't have to.
