the a/c on my 81 needs a recharging, i dont feel like changing it to 134a and i dont use the a/c enough to go hunting for some r12. well i pretty much never use the a/c, usually have the tops off. anyway, can i just take the belt off that runs the a/c compressor and remove the little electrical plug that connects to the side of it. the only thing that will happen is a small increase in MPH and HP right? also...whats the deal with the air pump, do i really need it? what are the thoughts on taking that belt off also? thanks

When I got my "76" my A/C was disconnected exactly like you said, belt removed and compressor unpluged. I drove it that way for months before I changed to R-134 and rehooked up everything. Here in Oklahoma in Aug when its 102 outside any cool air will help. If you truly don't ever want A/C I would recommend removing the whole system and getting it out of the way, actullay the engine compartment looks cleaner and better with out all the A/C stuff in there.

one day i might like to have the a/c, and i pretty much want to keep the car all original so i dont want to remove the compressor. but here in New England our summer days dont see much higher than 95 and i have another car that blows nice cold a/c so i think im just gonna unplug it and remove the belt.

I think that will work fine, good luck. I have family in Boston and when I visit I love those cool summer days.

You can still get R-12 on Ebay, but some of the cans look alittle old.

Good Luck

i just removed my entire a/c system about 2 weeks ago out of my 75. I noticed the engine ran a little quieter. I took out the compressor, refrigerator, and the condinser out. Gained hp, mpg, space, and lost about 70lbs of weight.

take it all out. I removed my compressor. Haven't got go the rest of the system out yet, but i will. Also, my air pump is long gone. No ill effects.

Some will say leave it in, and i can understand there areguments, but i say yank it. My car needed a diet.

AC Repair

If you can repair the leak they sell a drop in refrigerant for R12 its called R420B works great and you dont have to worry about changing the refrigerant oil.Its much cheaper than R12.

Tell more. Cannot find it listed on the EPA site and a Google search for R420B only turns up stereo parts.

tom...

thanks for the info guys. i just found out that if i wanted to i could get some r12 from my uncle, but like i said i dont use the a/c, so im gonan take off the belt and unplug it.

i dont want to totally remove the air pump, so would the car still run fine if i just took the belt off?
