A/C Programmer problem or vaccuum leak?

My '96 doesn't have the automatic climate control, and when the A/C is first turned on, the air blows through the defrost & onto the floor only.........but after a couple or 3 minutes, the air starts coming out the dash vents as it should.....I have done searches here regarding this, and the consensus seems to be that it's the programmer or a vaccuum leak. If it was a vaccuum leak, I don't think it would start working after a couple of minutes every time, but I'm no genius regarding these a/c set-ups either.......anyone have this happen before and/or can help me diagnose this?

Thanks,

Jeff

I'm spitballing here, but I would carefully check the vacuum system. This is not specific to your 96, but just general troubleshooting procedure. The default position, when no vacuum is applied, is usually defrost. Therefore, I think you have a vacuum issue. The system usually has a check valve and canister to provide residual vacuum when the engine is off. Hook-up a vacuum gauge between the check valve and canister and verify that vacuum will hold after the engine is off. If not, check and replace the defective part.

Thanks,

I'm hoping it's just a vaccuum leak! I'm gonna try looking a little harder before I spend $ on another programmer etc.

I appreciate the advice/info.

Jeff
