ok im hoping for this one spomeone has some kinda stupid easy fix like the one they had for my c3's window woes...... the power windows work just fine except they go terrible sloooowwwww ... anything stupid that makes them work faster...

question 2... the pass side head light works 99% of the time, the guy i bought it from said once in a while it just wont close and ya gotta give it an arthur fonzarelli and give it a little tap as you walk by.... anyone know of whate or where it hangs up, does it need to be lubed up or something.. it only takes a light tap to get it to close up... but its hard to look cool when ya have to punch your car every time to get gthe headlights to close..

also, how the hell do you get the headlights out of there..... mine are a bit unequal in intensity (different types of bulbs)and something like that will keep a retard like me pacing around my garage for days... i cant seem to get a screwdriver on all the screws to remove the things

is something missing in my car or did they not put a light on the roof liner anywhere...

The bushings may be gone in the headlight motor. Its about 6 bucks to fix if that is the case.

Here is my link I used when I had the issue.

Instructions on the repair

as far as the windows are concerned, I removed the door panels and tried to lubricate all the moving points in the door with lithium grease.

Welcome to the world of C4's ! :upthumbs

I hope this helps

Didn't the early C4's have a different assembly for the headlights? For some reason I was thinking I'd usually heard if they weren't working correctly that it was something different from the nylon bushings that's in the newer C4's? Actually...I just looked at the second link posted, and it says the bushings are 88 and newer, 84-87 had two gears...I still think you're looking at probably a fairly simple and inexpensive fix, since I've never done it on an early C4, for all I know you need a left handed metric crescent wrench to do the job. lol
I can't find it right at the moment where the diagram is for replacing headlights (actually I'm at work and it's a pain searching for stuff on this computer) but if headlight replacement is the same as my 92, you'll need to turn the headlights to being half open to get to all the bolts and screws to remove the headlight. There is probably a knob on the top of the headlight motor you can turn to move the headlights by hand?

Now as for your power windows being slow, for some reason I'm remembering that as being a common issue in the early C4's, that they were simply slow, possibly why I know I've seen quite a bit about upgrading the power window components to the newer faster stronger version.

Then again, I could be wrong about all of this, being blonde and male, I'm good at wrong. lol

I believe earlier C4s had a ribbon type device for lifting the windows. If you need to do some work in there and have a few bucks to throw at it, the later scissor type is better. But I think the ribbons are easy and inexpensive to replace.

Never done it myself though, so take my rambling for what its worth. :w

I think that's the other way around.
Early C4 = scissor
Late C4 = ribbon.

.....and the ribbon is easer and can be installed in an earlier C4.

Early c4's 84 had the ribbon. Scissor is later.

No, they are not normally any slower. My passenger side with ribbon is "normal" fast like any other power window. My drivers is "s l o w". Mine also had been jery rigged at some point. The firewall connector block had also been circumvented by previous owner. He drilled a hole through firewall and spliced the 2 power window wires that would have met inside the firewall connector. Why? No idea! Obviously didnt solve the problem. Perhaps there was a connection issue? There is NO TSB I've ever found
;-(

84-87 headlights use gears not bushings. It could be the gears need to be greased on a tooth is chipped. Replacement metal gears are available (oem are plastic). In any case they are annoying to service. You need to remove the whole headlight assembly. Try using the white emergency knob to see if when its stuck that does the trick. Might be slightly misaligned.

On our website corvettearchives.com (upgrades then 88headlights)are the GM conversion instructions to add 88-96 motors. They are MUCH more quiet and reliable!

You have to remove the plastic/fiberglass bezel first by opening/ closing the lights. Last time I think I just removed the negative battery lead when they were in process of moving. Easier than using the emergency knob. You might also want to consider replacing the stock glass headlights with plastic ones. They are lighter and less taxing on the motors/gears etc. Autozone sells them for $25. They also allow you to use the smaller european halogen bulbs. Hella makes a similar kit that sells for $75. One of the major vette catalog places sells it.

Nope...no roof light! You'd think that the sail panel would have been a good spot though. Later cars added a dim orange light to the rear view mirror. I hooked up the map lights from that mirror to give the light you are "missing".

I stand corrected on the headlight motors as well. Sorry for the inaccurate advice. Learn something new everyday. :eyerole

i think im gonna go ahead and try to replace the gears in the headlight motor fo s&g's ... for now i can deal with the window being slow, ill save the money to buy gas for the summer and maybe tear it apart over the winter

Which means after you solve it over winter...I'll do mine in spring :-D
I've owned the car since 92 and never really got around to it! I await your effort!:upthumbs

No need to be humble. I'm frequently wrong, and that has never stopped me from being an arrogant ass! ;LOL
;LOLI'm not an arrogant ass, but I'm at least 1/2 of that.

I cleaned and lubricated my ribbon window mechanisms and my headlight drive gears in my '84, with Lubriplate white grease, and they work SO much better! The headlight gears have a resiliant rubber segment that compresses when the motor runs up against the ends of the travel. These segments can be re-positioned in the gears so they work as good as new, without any new parts. I think the headlight motors were re-designed in '88 to a "shear pin" style gear drive. The "shear pin" style motors have the manual operation knob on the top of the motor. The "resiliant segment" style motors have the manual operation knob on the bottom.

To change the headlights or remove the motors, put the headlights in the "half way up" position so you can get to the screws. To do this:
1. Raise the hood.
2. Turn the headlights on so the doors open.
3. Turn the headlights off, and then quickly pull the headlight switch out to the parking light position. (You might have to try this a few times to get the lights to stop in the "half way" position.)
4. Disconnect the battery while you're working on things, so they don't close on your hands!
