88 Convert ( SOLD ) /1973 coupe 4 speed/1964 Vert!
Wednesday, my 88 is getting jealous since I've been spending SO much time with the 327 project.. the warning shims start squealing in the rear!

Thursday morning I had a flat ( while traveling ).

I limped into the gas station.. but the compressor didn't have enough air pressure to re inflate the tire ( I was off the bead at the back )

30 minutes later ( yes I wussed out and called Triple A) back home I scurried.

Friday after work I inspected the tires and saw CORD on the inside wall.....

(The car knows when I've gotten a bit ahead on bills & such and was NOT for 1 second let me spend another DIME on chrome bit's for that OTHER FLOOZY engine).

Friday, late I called around shopping for tires.. and took notes, 5 stores.

I decided on the local tire store I deal with, their prices are always within 5% and they give good service.

And I ordered new rear rotors & pads from my local guys ( 10:00 pm pickup )

Today bright & early I went upon the task of SPENDING MONEY ( keeping the economy flowing and all that) I jacked up the car & removed the two rear tires.. and off I went.

I stopped into the store ( with notes in hand ) and the guy I deal with looks over at the notes.. and starts sweating.. talks to his boss.. and this is before I say a WORD!

He starts rattling on how these prices on my note sheet are outrageous... etc etc.

And gives me the "Look this is the BEST I can do... since you always come here!"

2 NEW Brigstone tires
( since the BF Goodrich T/A radials were NO WHERE TO BE FOUND!)

SO
Potenza RE-730's
P-275-40-ZR-17
Steelbelted radials
Treadware 300
Traction AA
Temp A

$230.00 for the pair
Mounted /balanced etc,etc.
(which I'm liking very much)

So I leave my rims ( he has to pick up the tires from the warehouse) and he states the tires will be ready @ noon.

So back home I go to do a rear brake job, now I knew things we not going to be pretty... I just didn't know how bad...

I pull her apart and find it wasn't the warning shim.. it was METAL TO METAL!
OOPS.. and if that wasn't enough
Caliper seal sweating, hose splitting
etc etc.. so 3 MORE trips to the auto parts store and the rear brakes are now 100%.

I grab the tires.. and they look BEAUTIFUL...

On they go... take a test drive... we are good 2 go...

So I'm thinking...Hmmmm If the rear's are that bad...better check the fronts.

Up in the air she goes again......

YIKES!

The fronts are 1/32 away from the shims..
Rotors are cool though PHEW!

So 2 more trips..
5 cans of Brake Kleen
2 MORE hoses
1 good bleed
4 Bendix Semi Metalic ( Lifetime warranty ) pads.

Final test drive to post office, to mail in the Bendix Warranty stuff.. and on the way home.. I hear this low whining.....as I come to a stop..... the way the rear rotors are finished cut.. they have a swirl/crosshatch pattern... so it has a bit of wind down... not really bad.. just a NEW noise.

5:30 done with clean up~!

So $830.00 bucks lighter but Baby is happier!

I know the feeling... you can never go to the parts store once... and every time (and i mean every single time!) that your bank account gets just a little fat, your car can sense it and breaks (or should i say brakes?) well, happy vetting Vig.... your car should be good for a while

My Triumph

was EXCELLENT at gauging wallet thickness and would croak JUST infront of either the auto parts store, the dealer on at least near an ATM......

WOW!

I could keep you busy, Vig! :L Boy, what I could learn from an afternoon with you. (not that I need help with the spending part of the equation!) --- :L

It must feel great to get all of that done and with your own hands. Very nice... Congrats!!! :)

Yeah Len

It's like water.....

It flows...... even when you don't want it to!

So no warranty on the clutch???????

The problem with your car is not really a problem. It's the GM wallet sensor thats built into the seat. It sensors when your wallet is getting thick and responds by breaking something so to compensate for the fatter wallet.

Its all part the the computer system

What happens if that wallet sensor goes bad???:L :L :L

Do I have to go back to the dealer for that one?:L :L :L

You gotta figure that's the one part of the car that NEVER breaks. Or if it does, it malfunctions in GM's favor (ie, breaking stuff when your wallet's EMPTY).

Vig,

First thing I'd like to know is what in the world is that contraption in your avatar?

I know the routine too well. Battery was going fine two weeks ago and then, goes out and I need a new battery. Seems like the Corvette is in tune to my pay periods or something.:cry

It's the Lost in Space Robot

From the old TV series...

Warning...Danger Danger Will Robinson!

( Oh the pain!)

So the seat sensor ( for wallet OD ) Op code

I assume that it speaks in Hex...

So if the value for the check engine light to be true ( on )

The wallet OD has to be greater than $x

Which accounts for the following variables

Payday= $x+cc ( cc = cha ching)
Minus Tank condition Fuel>1/2
over CCL ( Credit Card Limit )
Where as x = $25.00
and CCL < $500.00

So if the following variables are true

Set check engine light...

Run random error blink code

Where as
a) If $x+CCL+cc is true.. download latest GM price listings for parts... fetch part that is 10% over CCL but not to exceed cc - full tank.

Flash code for part found.

or

b) Flash previous stored code from last week.. it will really twist his tail.

This however not cover the rich girl friend/wife seat adaptor.....

ahh man you guys crack me up:L:L

the funny part is mine was made in 79, and now that I think about it the technology was available then!! And she doesn't even have a puter.

At least I think she don't

In 79

The seat sensor was just a switch.. so when you ate well, it would close
(Or hit a speed bump to fast).

This caused the "Random Break Something Generator" to activate if the: Voltage was over 13.5 volts
And the seat switch closed
Modified by the switch in the odometer to activate after the warranty period was up.

( why do you think the Dealer & the DMV want you to stay away from the Odometer... this is a little know secret.)

Most people think that generator is the cruise module.... not altogether true.

The "RBSG" was housed in the cruise module.

The first program ( version 1.2 code ) would typically cause the cruise to malfunction first.

FYI

Not a chance! The dealer will come to you when the built-in sensor transponder signals a fault code!

BTW, that was a very good price on those tires. How are they?

I wondered the same thing for weeks! Then it hit me as I was about to ask him what the heck it was.

Good one Vig! :L

Funny thread!

I wondered about the avatar, too. I did think it was Lost in Space, but the funny colors on it threw me!

Now as for the seat switch on the older model vettes...I think I have a way to circumvent them! Last year my (I don't know what to call them) metal bars under the seat that connect the seat to the rails, failed.

Kenny took the driver seat out and put the passenger seat in the drivers side! Fit was fine, and I also had LOTS of room for shopping without the passenger seat in, so if it is only the driver's seat with the switch...exchange your seats with each other, and don't carry any rich passengers!

I switched my seats back after Kenny re-welded the metal. The driver seat is broken in 'just right' at 25 years old. I don't know what I'll do when we re-do the interior...I like my seat as it is. Maybe I'll just recover them and not put in new foam.
Can you remove the switch altogether when you have the seats torn down?

Vig,

Has your house been invaded by that creature? I don't know about the rest of ya's, but that thing gives me the creeps! LOL.

Brake KLUNK

WARNING,

My NEW Bendix pads did not have the BIAS SPRINGS in the box.

When I would STAB my brake pedal the front end sounded like it was coming APART!!!!!
The MOST embarasing part was when I hit a speed bump.. the front end made ALL sorts of weird noise ( loose parts ).

So the Bias springs PUSH the caliper in the full UP position.. with out em there is about 1/16 of an inch play... ergo the KLUNK!

So I went back to the Auto parts store today and described my delima... and they got me another set of front pads.. WITH the springs.

1 hr later...NO KLUNK...

Ahhhhhhhhh, Better.
