I bought my '81 a little over a year ago. It was an all original 4-speed in need of a lot of work but driveable. After a few months of playing around with it I decided to get some serious work done to it. I brought it to a shop that did some work on my '87 Vette a few years ago but now it had a new owner - but the new owner was the mechanic who worked on my car - so no problem, right? I told him I wasn't in a hurry to get my car back, I just wanted the work done right. I was getting the engine rebuilt.

Because of my work schedule I was finding it very hard to get back to the shop to check on my car but phone calls were assuring me that everything was fine. I paid half up front then paid a little more after a month. Then the nightmare started. I couldn't find the owner/mechanic anymore. Everytime I went to the shop it was closed. He still answered his phone and said everything was going fine but somehow we just happened to miss each other when I stopped at his shop.

Then one day I showed up and there was a tow truck hooking up to cars! I asked what was going on. The driver said the place went out of business and he was removing the cars. He was nice to me and said he'd tow my car last; if I could get it out of there before he hooked up to it, with proof that it was mine, he would let me take it. I pushed it down the street just to get it out of there.

My engine was gone though - apparently stolen! Cops wouldn't help me out. They said since my estimate didn't have a "work completion date" that that gave the owner all the time in the world to have my engine. His exact words were, "He could be working on it at his house right now."

Good news, insurance covered it and I ended up with a brand new GM High performance engine. Bad news... my original '81 is now just another Corvette - although now it has roughly 425 hp and scares all the dogs, cats and small children in the neighborhood - and upsets my neighbor on regular basis since it sets off his car alarm everytime I drive by.

Just wanted to share - original or not, it's a fun ride!

Glad it worked out for you!

Too many times these kinda stories end with the Corvette owner losing lots of money. You are very lucky indeed.

Did the shop owner skip town too?

You got very lucky and came out ok on the deal. 81's are pretty much just annother vette anyways, Original motor don't mean to much on them. Drive and enjoy

I'm glad that you got your car in time. I suspect that the phone he answered was his cell. That's why you always got him when you called. Did you try him later after you got your car to see if he could produce your L81?

Welcome to the CAC and the L81 Registry.

The story continues...

I don't know what happened to the owner of the business. I never could find him and neither could the owner of the building who evicted him. The only thing I heard of him since he stole my motor was when he somehow got access to my bank account and tried to clean me out there. I actually got lucky and found some charges to my debit card just after he made some purchases. I called the bank, got my money back and closed the account. I have a strange feeling I haven't heard the last of him.

Yes. You'll probably hear of him found dead some where.;)

Good ending though. L-81 ain't the best engine out there.:)

sorry to hear about your engine.

hope everything works out!!!!

That story got me totally P##$$ off and it isnt even my car!

What goes around comes around.

Keep smiling, Ken

Hi is there any way that you can post this guy's name? Maybe he moved to another state and set up business again. I would love to be able to avoid this guy at all costs. Sorry to hear about your loss but at least you have your car back.

Glad to see you were able to get your car, engine or not. I had a similar problem with a local vette shop. Sent my 84 in for a new dash, rear main and while it was in wanted the shop to replace all seals and gaskets short of a rebuild. After three weeks of phone calls I finally got the dash finished, got angry, picked up the 84 took it to a local shop that worked on a super beetle that I use to have. They had the rear main and other seals finished in three days. About two months later the vette shop is out of business. Scary stuff!!!!

Wish I had the know how to do all of my own work. I do as much as I can, what I can't do I have to send out. Still, I am learning as I go and can do more now than I use to be able to do. Part of that know-how is thanks to my 18 year old, he teaches me what I don't know and I teach him what he doesn't know.
