A very strange problem!!

A friend has a 1979 with the L82/auto.

A problem has arisen where when he shuts the ignition off the alt light goes on. When he puts the ignition on when the engine is off it doesnt light.

The car seems to run fine and he now manually disconnects the alt. connector when it is shut off.

This is very strange. The only thing I can think of is a bad switch or a broken wire in the column????

Any ideas??:confused

Shorted diode or faulty regulator in the alternator will act that way!~!!

There is a part inside the alternator called the "diode trio", whose purpose it is to monitor the output of the three phases of the alternator. If one of the diodes in the trio shorts, you will get this symptom. About $20 and an hour of labor to repair. I suggest installing a new set of brushes while the housing is split.
