I was wondering if you guys could help me out. I have an 85 vette. And I have noticed when I bring it up to 75-90mph it starts shakin. also when I slow down the stearing wheel starts to do shake kind of rough when I slowdown. Now could this be a result of old tires? poor allighnment?, time for some new brakes?
If anyone could help me out I would be greatful thanks! :)
This is a new car for me so I am just starting to figure things out.

Yes and yes, I can't tell you anything about the brakes without further input, but they should not be causing any erratic motion in your steering ot otherwise in the way the car handles, except when you are braking. If they're in bad shape, it could cause the car to pull one way or another when applied.

I'd look into alignment and balancing the wheel/tires before you go too far. ;)

your probably right.

Your probably right. I thought it might just be some bad tires and poor allighnment. Just makeing sure its not something huge that goes wrong common with vettes. Thanks again. I really apprecaite your response.

This is also a very real symptom of bad tyrod ends or Rack and pinion. I had to replace mine as well on my 85 and shes good as new

(Get an alignment after)

Was that expensive to replace the tyrod ends or Rack and pinion?:beer

Whole lot of shaking

Hi, It could be all of the above. If when slowing down you mean applying the brakes and you get a pulsating feeling thru the steering wheel and in severe cases the entire auto shakes you probably have warped rotors. It almost feels like the car is trying to walk rather than roll. The inexpensive route is to get the rotors cut, but from my experience your rotors are more likely to warp again since the imperfection is still in the metal. New rotors are the way to go. Once the rotors are cut they will not hold up as well as uncut rotors, I know that in some cases that a minimal amount of material is taken off to true them , but the flaw still exists. If we were talking about a Ford Ranger I would have the rotors cut , but on your Vette your more likely to be standing on them. Just my .02 cents. Muddywaters

I had the same issue with my 85. If the rubber is good have the wheels balanced on the Hunter 9700 machine. As far as I'm concerned it's the only way to balance these cars. Then proceed with the other options described above if the problem remains.

just my .02

If you replace the steering rack don't buy a cheap replacement. They don't replace everything.
Wheel bearings can cause some problems. The endplay can be checked with a dial indicator to determine if they are worn out.
Also look at the half-shaft u-joints. If they have over 75k miles they should be suspect. Especially the outer ones
Age of tires, if they are over 5 years old look for some new ones.

Just wanted to tell you guys how much I appreciate your guys help. words can not express how much I apprecaite it. Yea I think your all right. the car does need a new set of tires. So I will put some on and allign it and see if that helps and go from there.

Let me ask you all another question:Roll

I was driving it yesterday and the oil pressure went from 180's to 50-60's and the sensor read LO. Does this mean I have head gasket problems or the engiens screwed? it does have 131,000 miles on it. Another question I have, if I rebuilt the engine and the tranny how realistic and reliable would it be to use this car as my daily driver. aka my only ride. And if I rebilt the engine and tranny would do you think I could sell it later for what i put into it or ya think I would have to eat a couple thousand. Thats all, I look forward to hearing from you all.

My new best friends lol!:_rock

LMAO = laughing my ass off.

Ok guys im a tool, that reading of low temp wasnt what I thought. I had the digital button set on temp! its has low oil temp. ok so I"m a tool. lol:duh

Is the oil pressure good?

I'm betting the temp sender wire is loose or fell off.. or the sender is POOCHED!

the sender is located just above the oil filter on the block( Dark green / white wire )

Clean it & re seat it.. then try!

Oh yeah... have the tires balanced FIRST then we can see what's up!

My 88 is a daily driver!
