about to fire - can you double check me please?

Barry,

That happened when I put my Q-jet on my 73 last summer. Leaked just a drip at a time at the threaded connection. Went to ACE hardware and picked up that white tape you put on threads for plumbing. Gave it three wraps for $2.00 and no leak.

funny, i was thinking of that myself......and I've got a roll of that plumbers tape in my toolchest.
i was trying to figure out why it was leaking when it didn't leak previously and i shouldn't NEED to use the tape to stop it but if all else fails guess I'll give it a try.

no, I was going to leave it off so I had better access for when setting mixture, idle and setting timing.
would you suggest putting it on at least to start off with than removing it for my adjustments?

Barry - it has been crazy at work today and I just saw you reply. I leave the air cleaner on because of potential flames out the carb etc. After I initially start the car I remove to do fine tuning.

Congrats on getting her started.

How about simply trying to re-seat the connection where the leak is as opposed to trying to tighten it some more.

If the timing light worked before and you have not dropped it or something like that -- it should still work. Maybe in your excitement of re-starting the motor you are overlooking something -- maybe try again in the morning when you have calmed down. Not that there was any reason to get excited or anything :)

yep, i think I'll call it day and start fresh in the morning. Just getting her started and hearing her run again is plenty of excitment for the day :)

on the gas dripping, I'm going to try completely removing the fuel filter and than reconnecting it all up again and see if it help. THAN if it doesn't I guess it's the plumbers tape.

The timing light has me baffled. worked fine last time I used it in Sept. it wasn't dropped since.
i have the red clip on the positive battery terminal and I tried moving the ground clip to a bunch of different places thinking I just wasn't getting a good ground but nothing worked. Even fiddling with the clip on the #1 sprk wire isn't doing anything. It's very odd. :confused

Hi! Barry

Something to put in your memory bank for the next time you fire up the engine after major repairs, especially fuel related is to have a good fire extinguishers handy.

It sounds like every thing is fine and you just have a few minor details to take care of. Good job and you just earned your first merit badge for engine repair.

Ray

Hi Ray
are three extinguishers enough? ;LOL

yep, just the fuel line issue to deal with and setting timing and carb adjustments and she will be ready for a test run if it stops raining long enough to dry off the roads. :)

oh boy, my very own merit badge!!! :D

Barry,I was going to tell you to really tighten your fuel line. When I fired mine up,it cranked for a while then caught.Let it run for about 30 seconds turned it off and noticed the entire top of engine covered in fuel, also running down the sides to the floor.
Took my new line wrenches and counter torque wrench and REALLY cranked on the tripower lines.NO leaks.
Hope everything else is ok..Jim

Hi Jim
gee, thanks for the timely warning........... ;LOL

it's definately the connection where the fuel filter goes into the 90* fitting so I'll work on it in the morning.
so far everything else is looking good.

Finally got the timing light working - it was stupid operator error, not much of a surprise there and so far have the intial timing set. Now I need to remove the rubberband off the weights and set check total timing than set my carb adjustments and I think i'll be good to go. :)

Barry,
Unfotunately I cant be watching CAC 24-7.When I read your post Iwas ready to help you out then say I was a little late chiming in.
I must admit after my dealing w/ fuel leaks on my car so far I'm buying a 2 1/2lb chrome halon extinguisher and mounting it in the back.
ALso called my insurance agent and upped my coverage..

geez Jim, when I need help I expect everyone to be on here 24/7 all ready to answer my questions! ;LOL ;LOL ;LOL

BTW, I have THREE extinguishers.......... :D
can't be too careful.

WOW talk about coming a long way in a short period of time. GREAT JOB Barry you have to be proud of what your acomplishing.

Its hard to belive its less then a year ago that you were looking for a quailified mecanic to work on your car only to find out you were the guy you were looking for .

I know cars are just mecanical peice of parts put together, but I some times feel they co operate with you and makes thing easy.My 62 fought me tooth and nail. Its seams your 65 like you and is co-operating

Thanks for the kind words Larry :)
yep, i've amazed at what I've been able to accomplish but it's all because of the help on here that I was able to do it. If it wasn't for all you guys willing to answer my questions I wouldn't have even attempted any of it.
It really does feel good knowing I did it myself rather than just some local mechanic and chances are I wouldn't have been happy with the work they did anyway based on ALL past work I've had mechanics do on this car.
Most of the time the car did seem to be cooperating although a few times she did try to fight me but I guess that's normal but overall I guess my '65 does like me but she better considering all the pampering and money i've spent on her :D

I know what I did on this motor clean up project isn't even a drop in the bucket compared to things like building a car from scratch like you did with your '62 but it was a start, and it did allow me to get some experience and see that I can actually do some work on the car without completely screwing the car up. It gives me a bit more confidence now to know I can go ahead with other work and projects in the future ( with help from all you on here).

ok, I just pulled the whole fuel filter and fittings off, cleaned up everything, wiped the threads down good, put plumbers tape on both pipe thread fittings that go into the fuel filter itself as an added precaustion, and reconnected up everything.
You know, I really don't like the flare fitting on the one 90* fitting to the hardline that goes to the fuel pump. Those flare fittings are a PITA to get started unless it's just me, but everytime I've had to fool with it it gives me a hard time to get it started, sheesh!
Now that I've gotten everything back together I just have to wait for my wife to wake up to test it out again.
If I don't wait, the sound of the car's side pipes in the enclosed and attached garage right underneath the bedroom will wake her up and that doesn't make for a happy wife to get woken up that way (ask me how i know this :D ) plus I want her to keep an eye on those fittings again when I start the car just to be on the safe side.
I guess I'll find out if I have the gas line dripping fixed in about an hour.

See Barry, YOU were the only one who thought you couldn't do it!:D WELL DONE! Like Larry and so many others said you've come a long way in a short time but the good thing is you brought all of us along for the trip. Most of us learned something new with you or got clarification on things we sorta new a bit about already but the detailed walk throughs and "Basic" questions you asked (That most of us were afraid to) educated and updated everyone.

It sure is reassuring, especially to new members and ones taking on those massive restorations for the first time, to see this kind of patience, technical support and actual physical support there to help and the loads of pics to further explain things and show details. Yes this CAC family is quite a bunch that makes you proud to be part of and as you certainly already know can be a fun loving bunch of characters at the best of times. To have fun and get er done.....does it get much better than that? I bet our more experienced / seasoned members wish they had access to this kind of support years ago before the internet came around.

Congratulations again Barry and now you can go for shorter threads (New Years resolution?);LOL :upthumbs . Thanks for being such a stubborn student, we all appreciated it!

Doug

Hi Doug
thanks for all the kind words :)
yes, well, i'm almost done this particular project and I STILL am not sure I can do it ;LOL
it does feel good though to learn new things and be able to accomplish something and especially feels good to know I don't have to depend on local mechanics now for every tiny little thing anymore.
Gee, now maybe I can push myself a bit further and actually learn how to change the oil on this car, I haven't done that myself yet....... ;LOL

Doing these projects with everyone's help is one thing, but to get my threads shorter might take a lot more effort......... maybe even an act of god. ;LOL ;LOL ;LOL

BTW, I haven't seem you post much lately Doug, hope all is well with you and the family.

Wow has this thread come a long way since I last checked.... Congrats Barry. I'm in Boyertown Pa, about 40 NW of Phila. You're a couple hrs. away but it would be worth the trip anytime to give you a hand and maybe meet a couple more of our good members from your area. Also I think I mentioned before I have a small plane if you happen to be near any of the little airports down there. I know you'll keep us posted if there are any more problems. Oh! one more thing...... Don't try for shorter threads, I likem!!!

Mike

Mike
I'd welcome you anytime you want to come.
If you wanted to fly in, there is an airport about 15-20 mintes from me called New Castle Airport
http://www.newcastleairportilg.com/
believe me, I'd always welcome an experienced hand.
i'm trying to do as much as i can myself but a little experienced assistance to help me learn what I'm doing can be nice at times :)
Just say when/if you want to come down. :)

so glad we are amusing you Bob
:D

perhaps you may have some suggestions to add from your experience?
You know i'm just a rookie wrencher trying to learn and solve my car's problems

really? I took it you would rather watch this than TV. considering the crap that is usually on TV I can understand that :)

seriously, and suggestions you may have to throw in?
