i need to have my AC sytem checked out, as of this point it is not working at all (unit itself works but no cool air) i know i am going to have to have it recharged but isnt there a problem with charging the old systems... the other problem is any of the shops i hang around dont mess with AC so i have to find one who does!

what exactly do i have to have done?

First you need to determine where all of the R-12 went and fix that. Once that's done, take it to an A/C shop where they'll pump it down and ensure that it's leak free, then recharge it with R-12. Will be expensive.

thats why i havent messed with it to be honest, but the other day when it was 99 freakin degrees out it was like i was riding around in a sauna!

You just hit on why I put factory air in my 73 in 75 cuz when it's 90+ and raining, it is a sauna.

Without a sniffer, you may not find the R12 leak. My advice is to take your baby to a competent automotive AC shop and let them evaluate the system. If there is a problem, they will find it. They can also evacuate the system, get out all the old R12 leftovers, and convert to R-134A.

:)

To do right, that's an expensive proposition also. Bigger condensor and changing out all of the seals and hoses so the R134a doesn't leak out (smaller molecule than R12). The cooling capacity of the OEM unit was marginal and if you just dump R134a in, it will not cool as good as the OEM A/C did. But it's better than no A/C at all.
