Hi Folks

I'm looking for some advise on how to get to the courtesy light delay timer. It is located on the inside of the fuse panel, attached to a wiring harness, behind the large passenger side dash pad. ( I found its location on a wiring diagram in my manual.) My problem is that I can't determine how to remove the pad to get at the timer. The pad is fastened to brackets on the inside of the dash. I removed the lower carpeted assembly that houses the footwell light but that didn't seem to get me anywhere. I was thinking that perhaps the whole top dash deck, located under the windshield, should come out to create access to that area. I tried but was not able to remove the deck. I didn't want to force anything lest I break something. Before I start into the job again I thought that I would consult this forum. Any help or advise from anyone who has been there would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Bill,

I think the '86 is the same as my '84. You shouldn't have to remove the dashpad or the loaf. I got to mine by removing only the passenger-side black plastic footwell cover. While laying on your back look straight up under the dash (a flashlight helps) and you should see the "L" shaped black plastic timer module taped to the main harness. The module has white, black, pink/blk, and pink/wht wires in its connector.

Hope this helps.

Bugger's right, you should be able to get to it without removing the breadloaf.

The dash pad comes off easily once you remove the two screws at either end, three in the middle, and two at the defroster duct. Then, gently pull straight back to release the dash pad from the retaining clips in the carrier assembly (they're at the front of the pad and dash area - you'll get a good look once you get it out).

Thanks guys

I'll make another attempt to remove the dash pad tomorrow. My courtesy lights won't go out. I tested the door switches and they seem ok. I think that it may the the delay timer that is the problem. I need to go in there to test the circuitry.

Thanks again for your help

Bill

You really don't need to remove the pad... just the footwell cover. Also, you may have to drop the plastic box holding the ECU (sometimes the timer box is taped to the wire bundle coming out of the ECU).

HI Folks

With your help I was able to find and remove the 'Timer'. I did the requisite voltage and continuity test and found that voltage was lacking in the white wire (everything else tested ok). I think that I must have a short somewhere in the circuit, much to my disappointment. I'm not quite sure where to go from here. I'll have to figure out something. Once again thanks for your help.
