ADVISE NEEDED!!!! (desperate)

I am finally going to purchase my dream car..BUT, I can't decide between two cars....PLEASE, I need the advise of those who are truly knowledgable.

I am considering a '65 numbers matching 327 roadster with a recent NCRS inspection of 89 (?) points, 2nd tier(?)

OR a nonmatching 427 roadster, frame off restoration, beautifully done..looks like new....
Which would appreciate more etc etc...
PLEASE help me out here!

What year is the 427 car?? is it an orig big block car?? bottom line at the same money if both cars are similar condition, I would get the nom BB car, definate if its a 67.

Value

Since the 327 is an original motor and is already close to an NCRS Top Flight I think you'll find that it will appreciate better then an incorrect big block car, no matter how nice.

I assume that both cars will cost about the same now, correct?

THANKS!!!......the 427 is 41K....the 327 is 36K......the 427 is a '66..the other a 65...the 327 has side pipes and knock offs......it also has two spots the size of eraser heads on the fender where the paint is coming off....would the 427 maintain its value?

My vote is for the 65 327. I wouldn't pay 40k+ for a non matching BB.

Are you buying the car as an investment, or are you buying it for the love of Corvettes?

If for the love, which car would please you more?

Insufficient information to make recommendation-

What role do you intend for this car? If you're planning to do the whole NCRS thing, then your answer is obvious. If you're planning to drive it like it's stolen, then your answer is also obvious.

Is the NOM big block an original big block car? If so, the NOM isn't as big a deal, value-wise, and the car may end up being worth more in the long run than the NCRS car.

If you'll never show the car and just want a nice driver, either car will work. Depending on your level of mechanical skill, you may want the BB car which has already been restored (needs no work) or prefer the unrestored SB.

Good luck in either case!!

Hello,

Matching Numbers versus non-matching numbers.......

Small block versus Big block...........

Finished car or project......

I'd go with whatever makes you the happiest and will give you the most enjoyment.

Our solution was to get a car that was a previously a Top Flight car for driving and keep a 1980 for wrenching.

A word to the wise about NCRS Flight cars. Be certain that all the parts are still there that were on the car when Judged. Flight status is not transferable and some people have no concern about "borrowing" correct parts from friends for Judging purposes only.

Mac 73 and Impala both have it right, IMHO. Decide what you want it for and how it will be used, and go from there. My '66 has a correctly numbered 427 L72 block, manifolds, carb, and drive train, and I have the correctly numbered and dated square port 858 heads in the garage (actually, in Lars' garage).

That being said, it has a lot of mods for drivability....suspension parts, BG carb, MSD ignition, Hurst shifter, oval port heads and hydraulic cam and lifters (original L72s were solids). I drive it often, all year around, and I drive it hard many times as it was built to do that.....its fun, and I keep it fun. :dance :_rock For a modest amount in parts and effort, I could have it NCRS Flight judged........but I won't....simply because I like it better with the mods.

If I were to buy another, or this one all over, I would definitely go for a NOM BB simply because I am partial to big blocks, low key and non-structural modifications, hard-driving, and have no interest in judging even though I am an active NCRS member. That's just me. Get what YOU want for what YOU want to do with it. Then enjoy the hell out of it!!! Its a Corvette. ;worship :Steer

before i'd make any purchase decision, i'd make @#$% sure that either one i was interested in performed like it should. the top flight car is of little value if it never went through a PV (performance verification) of everything in the NCRS PV judging manual. the previous post is highly accurate. some people borrow correct parts, but that doesn't mean you're getting them when you buy the car.

i can tell you that the car i bought looked good, but was actually held together with jb weld and a few heli-coils. i'm not gonna make that mistake twice. there's a world of difference between one that looks good, and one that performs like a vette. if you haven't seen a PV judging manual, then it might surprise you to see what all it covers. it's cheap insurance to know that stuff before you spend a bunch of money.

Which car has better documentation?

As far as what was done..reciepts..photos.

Have you driven either? A drive around the block will tell VOLUMES about the car.

Are the cars LOCAL to you?

Be back with a post....

If money & return on the investment are not as big of a deal then the Daily driving fun factor....
My vote... BIG BLOCK!

The only thing that beats cubic inches...cubic FEET!

Great advice. It does sound like you are concerned about investment though. In that case, it is a gamble either way. While these cars, especially the # matching, are appreciating, they may not continue to do so.

Second, I would love a Top Flight twin of mine for shows and the occasional Sunday jaunt, but for a first vette, one that I WILL drive, I personally saw no point in that type of vehicle. It wouldonly retain value if condition was maintained. I do not expect that over the long haul.

Generally it is recommended to buy the best vette you can afford. I went the other way. I looked for a rarer car, paid a premium, got her on the road, and probably wont do anything more for the next 10 years other than enjoy it. Then I have a father/son project that to me is priceless.

As sounder minds above have said, by what will make you happy.

Do you know there are more big blocks on the road today then the general built. I just came back from a buisness trip,One of the the fellows I met just purchased an 1964 original big block it was just delivered to his home prior to him meeting me.A freind of his (a corvette judge )has looked the car over and gave him the go ahead, the car has the correct manifolds, intake, carb, shifter, rear end (YES I SAID 1964) every thing is correct to make it a big block except with no documents.

Needless to say he has a warrenty on the car if he is unhappy he can return it and I encourage him to return the car if he wanted to purchase a stable investment car.

Guess what there never was a big block corvette untill 1965,So what I am trying to say is its not to hard to put a big block in a midyear And a midyear b/b with no docs (this is my personal feeling here) will eventually LOSE value because there so maney of them poping up and being greated from small blocks.I would go with the small block if it has documents with it.Needless to say he has

Basically I don't care at all if the value of my vettes go up or down since I am not planning on selling them... I will agree with the others that say drive both and decide which one you like more. I find that the big block cars are a little heavy on the front end and the small block cars tend to handle a little more responsively, but again it's your choice. Me personally, I would opt for the nice 66 BB option.:beer
