Advice on a 90 Vette

Hey Dawn!!

I really think (like others) that the price is very good.

Is there a way you can do a Carfax??? That might be good insurance.....

I bought my Vette before I did a Carfax......I know.....cart before the horse, but anyway, it came back clean and that made me feel very good!

Looking at the picture of the interior:

The door panels appear to be the Torch Red color available in 1994. Before that the color was Bright Red, which appears to be color of the seats.

Also, the door panels, if original, would have more of a two-tone going for them. So, what I am trying to say is that it looks like someone painted the door panels to more closely match the exterior color. They look good, but they do not appear to match the seat leather.

Just my observation from looking at the pics. As I have stated here before: I am the master when stating the obvious. Or I could be obviously wrong!

I would still buy the Vette. A steal at that price!

Yea... I know about the wheels... that is a real bummer actually as I don't like them at all. So... do you think the car isn't originally red? Oh most cars I'm totally fine with modifications but for this one I'd rather have one that is more "untouched" and leave the mods to the older chevies. Hmmmm.... I'll have to think on it some more. Do you think then that the door panels are from perhaps the same car as the rear bumper????

The door panels are original. I have a 90 and mine look the same way. It is only 2 toned on the drivers side (black and red). The passenger door is a solid red. My seats are also a little off color then the interior. Probably because they faded.....

Hmmm!! I have more pictures... let me investigate..... It also has one of those bras on that front of it... yuck!

That may be something also. I put a bra on mine to hide two noticeable chips in the front under the fog lights. It's temporary till I can get the paint redone. That one looks like it could be tightened up a bit ... around the side markers.

The wheels are not stock. Like G Winter said the '88, '89, and '90 all had yr specific rims. You could always go with a set of the ZR1 rims. They look pretty good and you can find them all the time for a good deal. I've still got my stock ones, but I don't think I'll get rid of them.

The door panels are correct. The drivers door has a black swoop / slash where the door pull is.

The rear is the updated body style. A pretty common mod. The '90 was the last year with the round tail-lights. '91 was the year they did away with the black "divider" around the body, they became body colored and more moulded with the body.

It looks like the exhaust is not stock. The stock mufflers had dual exhaust ports, although only one actually flowed.

All in all it seems like a good deal. Especially with the 6 speed.

I know it all seems like a no brainer... .but what I REALLY want is a convertible AND preferably a white one. There's one now that I may be able to snag for $8500... its a 91, all original, everything works, white with a white top and only 95000 miles..... so for roughly an extra $3000 I can have what I really want without the hassles..... hmmm hmmmm.... of course, when you are broke $3000 more is alot of mula!!!

The seats look pretty good. They are the sport seats ... 6 way power. They look like they may be faded a bit, maybe from all the AZ/CA sun :L


It looks like it has the FX3 selective ride suspension ... the switch between the seat adjusters.

I know what you mean. If you want the Vert then I say go with that. I settled when I bought mine and of course the one I really wanted came along three months later. Don't get me wrong ... This one still gives me PERMAGRIN!

With the fleet you have maintenance alone must run a pretty penny. Not to mention insurance, tags, ect. Whats one more

I dunno. There are enough warning bells going off in your head to pay heed. I also learned to buy what I want and do my darndest to wait for it.

Once it's bought, there's buyer's remorse. The ideas bouncing about in your (t)head(s) sound like justification to buy a Vette; any Vette. Be careful AND patient. Great deals are truly no-brainers, which require little/no thought.

I'm looking into two white convertibles.... I should know by the end of the week if I can pull it off... I really want the more expensive one but probably can't swing it. I have found a white convt.. a 91 with red interior and a black top for $8500... I'm really contemplating that one too... I figure if the red vette is still around come week end and I don't buy these then it was meant for me to have it and I'll snag it up!!

Are you planning on painting the rear trim black ? Both quarter panels and the rear bumper are '91 or later. And what size are those rear tires?!!! Nothing wrong with huge tires, it's just that they seem to peek from under wheel wells.
Make sure you get a CARFAX report if the seller's history of the car is questionable. I'd offer them $4500 for the car---high miles, no A/C (why? might not be an easy fix or cheap fix), tach busted (see A/C comment), headlight motor busted (not cheap to buy new, exchange, etc...), hatch button doesn't work (why?--wiring problem, age?), does the hatch open with the PKE fob? Does the hatch button on the driver's door work?
If you want a project car, hey, it's only money, right?

and thats just the beginning. how hard was the car driven? rear tires worn excessivly than the fronts? are the fronts rouned on the outside? these are tell tale signs the car is abused like i would drive it but with 135k in miles whats next? a new motor? something smells fishy. that car should sell for around 7k but then again maybe they are tired of pouring money into it and want to just get "Rid" of it. ask them WHY the rear bumper was changed. get any and ALL documentation like fluid changes, rack pinion worn out? shocks worn out? whats NEW on the car? can't really visual inspect the car 250 miles away but the first thing i would do is climb up under that rear bumper and look up at the crash frame and see if its all bent up ect. look around where they park it for leaking fluids. AC don't mean squat could just need to be recharged. oh and CARFAX don't mean SQUAT! not Every shop reports to carfax. i think this car was rear ended and put back together as cheap as possible due to the mix match molding. most vette owners would take the time to make the molding right atleast!

who knows! just don't make an impulse buy and go with your gut instinct! you think you could get your money back out of it but thats only if you find another sucker like you *pun intended if you buy and find ALOT of other things wrong with it.

good luck on your search! you might want to search outside your state. verts up north are cheaper than in the south due to the short summers.

Thanks for the advice all. This couple has only owned the car for a year and they haven't done anything except routine tune-up to it. They claim it runs very strong... They are selling it because they want to get into rental properties and it is a good start for a down payment on one. The tires are not excessively warn and the miles don't bother me... what does bother me though is I will replace the rims, don't like the color combo and will have to pour probably at minimum $1800 into it to fix all the problems.... why do that when I can have a convt 91 completely functioning with 95000 miles for $8500? Good question I ask myself. So, I do think I am going to pass on it. I think if wasn't under budgetary constraints I would do it cause I like fixerupers.... something about them needing a little TLC makes me bond.... however, in this case I do think I'll pass. I can pass on in the info if you guys are interested. They are in Blythe, CA...
