Does anyone know which K&N 14" chrome air cleaner assembly will work on my 81 vette Im looking at the 60-1430. I do have the stock carb on but plan on replacing it with a edelbrock 1806 Thanks

On a side note, why are you going to change out the QJet to something else? Joe (MaineShark) in a past thread was just talking about it, the QJet is in power competition of the CFI and some EFI. Honestly, I don't understand why you would want to get rid of it. You could just opt for a rebuild.

Good luck!

hey thanks for your replys Im new to this so I could be doing the wrong thing.I do like the edelbrock polished performer intake will that work with my Qjet and where do I go to get more info on rebuild.I also did away with all the emissions will that effect this set up .Should I keep my HEI or get a new one Im just looking for the correct set up without using the computer and emissions.Help

The Q-Jet is a great carb. It is sort of the "final" carb - the most advanced of the breed, just before the switch was made to EFI. Actually, the only thing I would consider replacing my Q-Jet with, would be EFI.

The stock GM HEI is a darn good ignition, as well. Unless you're running something special that requires a lot of spark (say, a supercharger), you won't need anything more than the stock HEI. You could get one from a slightly earlier car, to avoid the computer, but I'm not sure what you'd have to do to your wiring harness...

Joe

I agree with Joe. Our breakerless HEI is a pretty top-of-the-line ignition system. Unless a problem with it, I don't think I would change it out either.

i think the key here is dumping the computer. You can't keep the '81's carb and distributor if you want to dump the computer.

Hey guys- I just went thru this on my 81. I ended up buying a newly reconditioned Q-Jet from JEGS ($360 with shipping). The carb came from Jet Performance Products and was actually cheaper thru Jegs , Jet wanted another $40. I bought the "stage one" carb there are 2 more stages offered for more performance. Since I changed the carb to a non-computer application, I had to change the distributor to a vacuum advance one, ridding the car of the computer. Simply unplug the 4 wire connection leading out of the distributor (theres only one -4 wire connector at this location) . The only adverse effect so far is the "check engine" light stays on, but i will disconnect this bulb when i go into the console to change out the radio (soon?).
Go look at the product from jetperformanceproducts.com- theres a link for q-jet's on the home page. I am very pleased with mine so far. good luck, email me if i can help you get thru the change-over. mike j.

When you rid the 81 vette of the computer by unplugging the HEI which puts it in the bypass mode it goes back to the original timing can you then dump the EGR stuff without effecting carb. operation

Tach

What did you do with the tach hook up when you installed new distributor and which distributor did you use

aerie1761- I had decided to get rid of the smog pump, so it was disconnected and the pump itself was removed (put in storage). The return gas from the cat, and the gas lines from the exhaust manifold (2) were capped off. Have not needed an inspection tag yet so i dont know if it will pass the smog test.
As for the tach, I bought a distr. off the shelf from my local parts store- I asked for a distr. for a 1980 Corvette which is a vacuum advance. The tach hookup is in the rotor cap, not withing the distr. itself. The new distr. i bought was a remanufactured unit, lifetime warranty, GM product and was under $100. The only adverse effect so far is the "check engine" light stays on. I plan to unscrew the bulb soon.
Email me if I can help you more on this....mikej
