Air filter housing?

What do you know. I Have finally managed to break of one of the tabs on my air filter housing. Little too tight I guess.
Well any way my new housing has arrived. I attempted to remove the old one and was unsuccesful. I see there are two knobs on the top. All they seem to do is turn. They don't unthread. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The knobs screw into a small metal clip that clips onto the radiator shroud. Sometimes these clips slide off the shroud which means they are basically spinning freely under there and not holdign down the air filter housing. Try lifting the knobs so the clips get forced against the top of the shroud and then turn the knobs slowly to unscrew them from the clips. In other words, the clips need to remain stable to get the knobs unscrewed. Hopefully that works for you.

It may take some effort before you can finally free the nuts from the studs, but when you do be sure to secure the clips somehow to prevent a reoccurance of this problem. One way that was mentioned in an old Corvette Fever or Vette magazine was to pop rivet the clip in place. In my case, someone had already secured the stud with a couple of extra nuts and washers.

I also managed to crack the plastic around my driver's side hold-down screw. I think I had the vented cover on slightly crooked and tightened it down, took a couple weeks to crack. I fixed it by using a short length of strapping screwed to the housing to hold the original clip in place, no probs so far. Best way to check your filter is to remove the entire airbox from the front of the MAF by springing the two snap-clips and undoing the two top hand-screws and removing the ram and air box as a unit. This allows you to check/change your filter on a nice level uncrowded surface.

Man, I had the same problem! I finally had to shove a flathead screwdrive under the box until I either applied enough force to hold the clip in place or get up against it to keep it from turning (or a combo of both) don't remember. It was definately frustrating.

Man I wish I would have asked for help, cause then I wouldn't have put it back together without securing the clips as mentioned above, but with the K&N I figured I wouldn't have to worry about it for a long time. Oh well, I'll find out how well it comes off soon, when I pull it to cut the lid
