I am thinking about removing the air pump on my 81.What are the pros and cons?

Cons:
1. Will not pass some state's inspections.
2. Could lower re-sale value, especially if you don't keep track of the removed parts.

Pros:
1. Cleaner looking engine compartment.
2. A minor increase in horsepower and fuel economy that you will probably never feel.

Myths:
1. "You will be polluting." This is not true, AIR was a way for auto makers to comply with the letter of the law, not the spirit. The car will probably pollute less without the AIR.
2. "The computer will throw codes with the AIR disconnected." Again, not true. The old CCC system will function just fine without it.

God bless, Sensei

Con: For one it's illegal to mess with a Federal EPA Emission System - fines can be up to $5000.00 a day if you are caught - slim chance I agree because I don't see how this could be enforced. The cops aren't going to do it unless you really torque em off some how.

If you do take it off - hold onto it and sell it to the NCRS restorers that need one for their restoration project.

If you decide to remove it, let me know and I would be interested in it.

If your state tests for emissions, check to see whether your car is exempt from testing. You may need the AIR in order to pass the test.

As long as you are not required to pass the vehicle through emissions in the state you are registering the vehicle then you have an extremely very little super small chance of ever being fined. It's up to you, it's your car! I hold onto every part I remove.

I live in PA and am exempt from opening my hood for a visual as long as I am under 5000 miles from the previous year inspection. And it does look so much better!!!! Don't care about resale value, this is my first vette and I'm keeping it. Did hold onto all the parts.

I agree...I took mine off when I did the second engine rebuild. Sure cleans-up the engine compartment alot. Have all the original parts in a box. I guess one of these days I need to put all of this stuff up for sale..including the stock exhaust system. Just love those sidepipes.
